AAA Boys' 1600m Preview
We saw a terrific final stretch in last year's AAA 1600 meter final and we could get more of the same this season with a healthy amount of contenders and plenty of sleepers eager to throw themselves in the conversation.
Carlisle's Sam Affolder enters this race as the PA#1 after a 4:08.67 on his home track earlier this season. Though just a sophomore, Affolder has made quite an impact on the Pennsylvania distance scene, which he'll leave after this season. Affolder will be coming off the 3200 meters and that could affect his 1600 performance, however, and a number of guys are going to be opportunistic here. Isaac Kole, also of Carlisle, and Jesse Cruise of Cedar Crest make for a strong group of D3 entries in this stacked race.
Central Bucks South's Matthew Scarpill made a big statement at District 1, winning with a fantastic last 800 meters. That wicked kick will come in handy in this race. He enters the race as the top seed with plenty of confidence. Second to Scarpill at District 1 was OJR's Liam Conway. Conway took second in the mile at indoor states and ran a PA#3 4:13.45 this spring. CR North's Bryan Keller and Sam Earley, West Chester Rustin's Brandon Hontz, and Springfield-Delco's Liam Galligan are other strong entries from D1. Galligan is the lone returning medalist in the field from last, having placed fourth.
LaSalle's Evan Addison looked strong, taking the District 12 title in 4:17.40, despite some heat. He is expected to be among the leaders in this race. Also from District 12 is Roman Catholic's Sean Brown, who took second to Addison. Brown has a great kick, and if he's in the mix, he can't be counted out.
Abington Heights' Kyle Burke and Wallenpaupack's Tyler Wirth are a couple of District 2 runners with a good shot at the podium. Pottsville Area's Collin Ebling won a dramatic District 11 title and could be a factor this week. Look out for surprise WPIAL champ Le'Shawn Huff of New Castle, who will look to pull out another shocker.
