AAA Boys' Discus Preview
The newly minted state record holder in the discus, Jordan Geist of Knoch will look to complete his second event three-peat on Saturday. His 208-7 at the WPIAL (District 7) meet topped Brian Milne's old state best of 207-4 from 1991 and is the second time he has been over 200 with the platter. If the wind is right, Geist will undoubtedly climb from his US#9 ranking as practice sessions have shown there is more left in his powerful right arm.
Currently second on the AAA yearly list at 193-3 is Luke Hoffman of West York Area. The senior has improved by almost 30 feet from a year ago when he was 11th at Shippensburg. The second and fourth place finishers in AAA in 2016 also are back as North Pocono's Matt Slagus (second) and South Fayette's Sam Mastro (fourth) will look to improve on their podium positions. Slagus has thrown 186-1 so far this year for the No. 3 ranking, while the southpaw Mastro is sixth at 179-2.
Campbell Parker of Greencastle-Antrim and Seneca Valley's Zach Gehm also have topped 180 feet this year, while sophomore Nolan Landis of Cathedral Prep, Keith Dreese of Selinsgrove and Alex Murray of Hempfield also return from last year's PIAA top 10.
