AA Girls' Shot Put Preview
After a close defeat in the discus on Friday at states last season, Hickory's Tori McKinley roared back to claim the shot put title on Saturday. The 2017 indoor state champion will look to add a second straight outdoor title to her resume in her final state meet.
McKinley unleashed the best toss of her career at the District 10 Championships in Ohio last weekend, a 48-2.5 for the title. That shows McKinley is in top form and ready for what should be a great state meet. She be heavily favored for the AA crown.
A pair of fellow seniors will be looking for the upset over McKinley. Neumann Goretti's Janese Lynch was second a year ago. The Wake Forest commit has a best of 44-5 this spring, but it'll likely take a bigger throw than that for her to claim the title. Burrell's Lizzie Weimer was third in the competition last season. She tossed a PR of 43-8 to win her third straight WPIAL title last week.
McKinley's Hickory teammate Michaela Burkhauser was sixth a year ago at states. She returns to Ship with a new PR---a 41-1.5 from District 10 last week. She'll be one to watch. So will other returning medalists Cassidy Cunningham of Elk County Catholic and Megan Parker of Mercer Area. They took seventh and eighth respectively at this meet last year.
District 9 champion Tori Obenrader of North Clarion and Punxsutawney's Sam Dyson are among the other shot putters with 40+ throws to their names. They'll be looking to grab some hardware at Ship.
