Dalton Hengst has transferred to Bishop Shanahan in a surprising move that brings one of the nation's top distance runners from Maryland to Pennsylvania for the final semester of his high school career. Shanahan coach Pete Uhlman confirmed the news to PennTrackXC and MileSplit.
Hengst, a senior, competed for McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland, for the first three and a half years of his career, and as late as two weeks ago at the VA Showcase. Now he has joined one of Pennsylvania's top track and field programs, effective immediately. Hengst will compete as a member of Shanahan at this weekend's Millrose Games in New York.
Shanahan already boasts a talented team that includes Josh Hoey, the current US No. 2 in the mile. In the 4x800 meter relay, Shanahan ran a current US No. 2 time of 7:49.37 in December.
Hengst, who resides from York, Pennsylvania, is signed with the University of Mississippi. He's a three-time Maryland/DC Private Schools champion in XC and a two-time Foot Locker Nationals qualifier. He ran his 5K XC best of 14:57 to win at this past fall's Paul Short Run.
On the track, he holds personal best of 1:54.75 for 800 meters, 4:08.04 for 1,600 meters, and 8:56.96 for 3,200 meters. He was the Penn Relays champion in the mile last spring. Most recently, he placed second to his new teammate Hoey in the 1,000 meters at the VA Showcase in a time of 2:25.30.
