Did I ever mention I HATE needles?
Today I went to my doctor to get my blood drawn to test my iron. Being a female DISTANCE runner, it is important to always know what is going on with my iron, ferritin, iron stores etc… especially with all this road running! Every distance runner knows we lose blood cells through repetitious foot strike...and also being female, I lose iron in other ways…ahem… Anyway, female distance runners have a history of having problems with iron/ferritin, so I try to make sure I get my blood tested AT LEAST once a year. This way, if they see my ferritin is low, I can up my red meat intake or take iron supplements before it causes a problem…AKA, for me, prevent having to have an even BIGGER needle stabbed into me to get iron intravenously. YUCK!
Anyway…Every time I am about go get my blood drawn, I always have to tell the nurse my rules. Hahahha It is always the same spiel I tell them. 1. I need to lay down or I will pass out. 2. I cannot see the needle and/or my blood or I will walk out or pass out. 3. You only get once chance to hit my vein. If you poke me and miss, you don't get to poke twice, I will have to reschedule an appointment. (okay exaggerated, but I say it anyway with a giggle.) 4. Can you use a children's needle? ………….Well, funny enough, the nurses always find my vein on the first try and most of them use a children's needle, or at least say they are…The children's needles are smaller, smaller needle is good news to me…(maybe they always get it on the first try because I stick out both of my arms and ask them which vein is better? Hahahhaha)
A little ridiculous? Yes, I know…but like some people have a fear of flying or heights or whatever, I just don't like needles. It really doesn't hurt that much, but just the idea really freaks me out. So the day I know I have to get my blood drawn, I make sure I am hydrated, not OVERhydrated, but hydrated because I heard that blood comes out faster if you are hydrated…And then once the needle is in me, my face flushes and I get dizzy and I continually ask when they will be done..what about now, and now? Is it done yet? HAH!!! Conrad always busts on me because I also leave the band aid on for at least one day after I get my blood drawn if not two, which he says is "ridiculous." And yes, it is, but I continue to do this! Hahaha
I get the results tomorrow afternoon… I think I'll go home and eat some steak…

Along with getting my blood drawn, I saw the doctor because of my right hip. Until now, it has only held me out of a few workouts, when I was in college. I have had the same problem with my right hip extensor for over a year now and the doctor prescribed me "sport massage" AND he said, if it isn't better after four massage sessions, I may have to come back to do acupuncture! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! WHAT????? Oh lord, lots of needles, lots of needles! I am freaking out! I am like, please hip get better, please, please. My doctor (who is a certified Swiss Olympic Doctor), said that acupuncture could "release" the tension in my hip…it could work wonders…………..So from now until my four massages are done, I am going to be crying every night and having nightmares…Okay, perhaps not that extreme, but I asked the nurse if she could come in and hold my hand if I had to get it done. HAH! She is the one who took my blood…. Hahaha Well, I am nervous, but let's just hope I don't have to…Oh man, just the idea of one little needle freaks me out, let alone a bunch of them in my rear area! Hahahha Most of you who ran with me know that I always complain about how my butt hurts, but it is really my hip…so needles on my butt cheeks…WELL, at least if I do have to get it done, I know I have a lot of, umm, ahem, "cushion" back there so that's good…I think…

I am afraid of needles, but see my tattoo? My friend Renee Gunning got mine traced and put onto her leg a year after mine! Best friend tattoos! I guess because I couldn't actually SEE the needle and it isn't as long, I didn't mind it. It hurt though!!! OUCH! Sara Graybill held my hand when I got it done!
