10/18 Pioneer Athletic Conference Championships @ Daniel Boone Homestead

RESULTS POSTED

A one-two by Boyertown's Jason Weller (15:15.8) and Mark Dennin (16:02.0) was not enough to hold off the Owen J. Roberts pack in the team chase. OJR assault was started by Eli Weeks who lead three teammates across the line from 5th through 8th place. Their 39 points were six better than Boyertown. The Perkiomen Valley girls dominated behind the win by Kelsey Conroy in 19:07.5. Perk Valley placed five in the top 15.

10/19 PIAA District 12 Championships @ Belmont Plateau

RESULTS POSTED

Robeson's Shatievah Lewis rebounded from her accidently DQ a week earlier at Tennent, and ran the fastest time of the day in either division, going 19:32. In AAA, Girls' High upended Central 31-56 by placing seven girls in the top 11 behind Brittany Jackson in 21:31. Central went 1-2 with Rayna Kratchman at 230:41 and Mary Morgan in at 21:18. In the boys' races, E&S's Terrance Lee went 16:54, the best time on the day.... but Masterman put three in the top five and won by seven, 42-49 over E&S. The Central boys went 1-3-4-5-8 to score 21. Jeff Kinkaid won in 17:31.

10/19 Tri-State Coaches Association @ Cooper's Lake

RESULTS POSTED

Defending AAA State Champion Latrobe has added swimming to their training as a day-before-racing-respite for the legs. That was kind of appropriate on Thursday, because it was a mudder's kind of day. Strength, patience, stamina and longer spikes were the runners' best friends as rain and pre-meet slide-throughs turned the course at Cooper's Lake into a quagmire. And earlier temps in the 70's disappeared and dropped to the 50's by the first race at 4. Fortunately, the rain abated during the boys varsity race, and was virtually non-existant for the girls varsity.

The cooler temps helped a lot of runners, including defending WPIAL Champ Natalie Bower of Latrobe. The swimmer-runner needed all of her water water skills as she negotiated the sloggy start heading up the first large hill. The sophomore leader of the defending PIAA AAA Champs showed patience, and when she crested the hill, said she felt strong and decided to use the downhill to push.

Latrobe was decimated by the loss of four seniors in the top seven following their rise to the top in PA. Bower, who was named a co-captain of the team this year along with senior Amanda Binkey, says that it was the JV girls who just stepped in and stepped up. Bowersays she and Binkey try to help the girls focus on the positive, as she says, "because the sport is so mental. You can't think negative and do well."

Natalie Bower powered her way through mud over some great competitoin at Tri-States.

The team depth was evident as the five were in at 2:26 behind Bower's winning 19:45. But Fox Chapel also has some plans for this year, and behind their one-two sister punch of Rachel and Laura Humphrey in 4th and 12th place at 20:35 and 21:30 respectively, the points added up to 121 each for Latrobe and Fox Chapel. The 6th person for Fox Chapel was ahead of Latrobe's 6th, giving the Tri-States title to them. Bradford finished 3rd behind the 2nd place 20:18 by junior Sarah Lonzi, Baldwin was 5th behind sophomore Kristie Domis in 3rd in 20:21.

Bower says she may forgo a return to the pool to continue training for another run at Foot Lockers. "I didn't do well in New York last year. We'll have to see how I do. If I continue to work hard after States, maybe..."

Both PA#4 Mount Lebanon girls team sat out on a coach's decision, based on the conditions and the one-week turnaround for the District 7 meet at the same course.

The North Allegheny boys are clearly the best team in western PA, and have earned a PA#3 ranking that they can challenge in two weeks in Hershey. The race was over early, in the middle and late as they placed seven runners in the top 20 with a spread of just 41 seconds for their scoring five, all in the top 12. Juniors Matt Jacob and Justin Taylor led the assault, finishing 3rd and 4th in 16:54 and 17:19, respectively. For those looking ahead, the top seven only has one senior. Josh Christopher of Penn-Trafford survived a semi-strategic race up front, running 16:51 to beat T.J. Hobart of Baldwin and Jacob by three seconds. Scott Van Kooten of Pittsburgh Central Catholic tried to put the race away early by taking a 15 meter lead on the first hill. The mud and front-running took its toll, and he held on for 5th in 17:20. North Allegheny's 36 point were 102 better than 2nd place Seneca Valley.

10/19 YAIAA Championships @ John Rudy County Park 5K

RESULTS POSTED

There is no scoring in the YAIAA meet, but, as good runners and avid fans often do, they take the results and do their own math. While we can't report that York Suburban won anything, a close inspection of the results reveals that they places three in the top nine, one more at 18 and one more at 38. And in the boys race, there were York Suburban runners in 9th, 12th, 13th, 22nd and 24th. In both cases, no other team had better placement. Molly Smith led the York Suburban girls with a 5th place 19:59.80. Fellow soph Jordan Jenkins won the race for New Oxford, going 18:55.55. Matt Cocciardi was York Suburban's top runner, finishing 9th in 178:13.77. Red Lion junior Greg Kareis took first in 16:28.06.

10/20 SOL American Conference Championships @ Ursinus College

RESULTS POSTED

Upper Dublin locked up both the meet and season championship titles (includes dual meets) with confincing wins. The girls were lead by Heather Calisto with a 19:20, and three teammates at 3rd, 5th and 7th. The boys took 3rd (Joe Dorris in 16:09), 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th to tally 29. Wissahickon's Nick Crits was 1st in 15:58, with teammate Teddy Miller 2nd in 16:00.

10/20 SOL Continental Conference Championships @ Williams Tennent HS 5K

RESULTS POSTED

It's a Council Rock North kind of year. Against traditionally strong teams, the girls placed six in the top 11, including the first place by Allison Sikora in 19:21.72. Central Bucks West and Hatboro-Horsham were 2nd and 3rd in both the meet and the season series. THE CRN boys outdistanced Hatboro-Horsham 35-67 in the meet, and by a single point in the season series. Matt Wikler ran 17:47 for 5th, and had five teammates in the top 15. Tom Mooney went 17:06 for the win.

10/20 SOL National Conference Championships @ William Tennent HS 5K

RESULTS POSTED

They say every runner counts... but not when you don't count every runner. For the second week in a row, Pennridge #1 Sarah Simonetti was DQed. She has been running better than ever this season, but hasn't scored at two meets at William Tennent for the past two weeks. A week ago, a missing official cost she and two fellow runners their awards at the front of the race. Fast-forward a week, add driving rain, a promise from league officials to have every cone manned, and then throw in a missing official, and guess what you have? Say it ain't so! Yep, two hours after the race, Simonetti is DQed. Support was there from opposing coaches, but the decision stood. The loss of a single point - Simonetti won by over a minute - cost Pennridge the meet, but also the season title, that includes dual meets, by a single point to North Penn. As it was, her teammate Nicole Mehlman won in 21:13.18 (again, driving rain and very windy). Whew... does this get old, or what? Mark the course. Man the course. Let the kids run. (OK, end of editorializing). In the boys race, Central Bucks South took five of nine and seven of 11 spots behind Bob Greer's 17:21. The took the meet with 27 points and the seasons title by three over North Penn. No controversy there.

10/21 Central League Championships @ Rose Tree Park 5K

RESULTS POSTED

In the first minute of the girl's varsity race... as the teams ascended a short rise before the first turn into the horseshoe on another newly designed Rose Tree Park course, Hannah Granger reached back without looking to encourage a teammate. "I didn't know who it was," Granger says. "We all do that for each other." That teammate was June Farley. And as it turned out, Farley scored for the team for the first time this season after coming off an injury that cost her training time.

It was leaning Haverford's way at 2 miles,
but Haven's 4-5 were moving.

That kind of in-race support is one of the traits that makes this team special. Individual champ Liz Milewski sees it every race. "Somebody is always there to pick up somebody else." That's how you draw up a team race, but this year, Radnor is making that dream plan a reality week after week. The top six girls have finished in a different order in every race. This week changed more than most.

Milewski said the plan was simple. "Stay as a pack through the first mile, or as long as we could." Well, the pack of five, Milewski, Granger, Shannon Holm, Kelyn Freedman, and Katie Lally, stayed together past the mile. By 1.25, it was Milewski, Granger and Freedman running 2-4 in the race, with Holm back 10 meters, and Lally, who was having a very out-of-character tough day, another 10 meters back.

But it was only a few seconds later when Radnor senior June Farley appeared. She had been injured at the start of the season, and was pleased this summer when Granger and frosh talent Freedman joined the team. As she headed along the straightaway toward the back part of the course, she could see Lally just ahead. She knew her team needed her support, so she pushed on, and by two miles, she had caught and passed Lally. "I was a little surprised, and hoped she would be able to come with me." Farley quickly realized she was now scoring for the team. "That motivated me a little bit more. In the last mile, I felt secure as our 5th and feel I could have pushed it harder."

For the second week in a row, it was Milewski who ran first for the team. At last week's Delcos, that meant 2nd in the race. She knew she had run out of real estate in that race. But this redesigned course –- the third version of this season because of construction -- was reportedly about 40 meters over 5K. As she ascended the hill approaching two miles, Milewski saw Conestoga's Hannah Kligman just ahead. Kligman had maintained a lead from about a half mile into the race. "It was an exact replay of Delcos when the Carroll girl was in the same exact spot, and she beat me. I said I'm not letting it happen again."

Milewski had more than a mile to go, and she used all but 200 meters of it to catch and pass Kligman at the newly added wood chip path that negotiated the mud swath cutting through the park. Her time of 19:14 was 26 seconds slower than the prior week, but the new, longer and muddier course slowed everyone's time by a lot. Milewski has not been able to do any road runs with her team so that she can train exclusively on grass to avoid the kind of injury she had. "It is hard, because I was in the pool all spring. But I just needed to figure out how to come back into it with enough time for States.

The team now takes aim at repeating as District 1 champions. Farley feels she is ready to contribute again. "We now have six strong runners. I am feeling more confident in our team and as an individual."

Sounds like they're ready to have races that really count.

In the boys' race, Strath Haven and Haverford were 1st and 3rd, respectively, at last week's Delcos. But this is a whole new race, and without Cardinal O'Hara present, it figured to be a lot of black and bright red at the front of the pack. It was.

At the half mile mark, there were four Haverford runners in the lead pack with three from Strath Haven. And Haverford had six ahead of Haven's fourth man. By the mile, Haven had three against two at or near the front, but Haverford still had five in front of four. At two miles, it was Haven's Rob Speare and Haverford's George Walton one-two. Then Haven-Haverford-Haverford-Haven-Haven-Haven, followed by a ton of Haverford harriers. Haverford eventually recovered a place or two, but the race complexion had changed. Haven would finish 1-2-7-8-16 for 34 points, with five in front of Haverford's fifth. Haverford tallied 50. Strath Haven's Kevin Murry won in 16:22, four seconds ahead of teammate Speare.

It was a great day for the Zarger household of Harbor Creek HS. Sophomore Lauren won the varsity girls race in 19:02.1, and her brother, Alex, a senior, won the boys' varsity race in 17:12.4. 10/21 CONF/LEAGUE WEEK #8 PREVIEW:

It is Match 3 of 5 between league rivals Coatesville and West Chester Henderson at Thursday's Ches-Mont race... but added to the fray this week will be defending PA AAA champs West Chester East. Don't ask why Coatesville didn't leave PA for competition this season... because they have enough on their plate right her in their own backyard. It's League and Conference week in PA, with two District meets on tap in both Philly and Pittsburgh. I'll be at the Tri-States meet at Cooper's Lake Thursday, traveling Friday, and then at the Central League Champs in my own backyard on Saturday. Send those results when you have them. I'll be posting like a crazy person. There could be as many as 35 meets. The Washington County Coaches meet was Monday. Lehigh Valley was moved from Tuesday to Friday because of Rain. Race well. Here comes the coolest part of the season!
