12/30 INDOOR WEEK #5 SUMMARY:
On 12/27 at the CHRISTMAS CITY RELAYS at Lehigh University, Harrisburg was strong in the relays, with the boys taking the 4x200, and the girls capturing three, the 4x200, the 1600 sprint medley relay, and the 4x400. Abby Schaffer of Easton won the pole vault. Harrisburg's Lhayana Dallas, Tericka Clark and Carlysha Townes were 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the 55 hurdles. Bethlehem Catholic's Joe Kovacs threw the shot over 53'. And Norristown's Courtney Bell triple jumped over 36'. At the MARINE CORPS INDOOR CLASSIC in New York, Brittney Sheffey (Bellport, NY) took the lead with 300 meters to go after following defending champ Shaniel Chambers of Chester through splits of 31 – 65. Chambers took the lead back at the bell and would pull away for a new meet record 2:11.74 win over Sheffey. The Chester girls then took 6th in the 4x400. In the 4x200, Ridley's girls ran a sub-1:50. For the PA boys, Hatboro-Horsham finished 5th in the 4x800. And Methacton ran sub 11:05 in the DMR. On Friday at week #1 of the COLGATE WOMEN'S GAMES @ Pratt Institute in NY, Syeeda Gee of Engineering & Science had a great first night, winning the HS 1500 and taking 3rd in the 800. Upper Dublin's Vicky Gocht tied for 3rd in the 400, with Acoya Gaines of Engineering & Science in 9th. At the SETON HALL INVITATIONAL, Chester's girls captured two relays, winning the 1600 Sprint Medley Relay (West Catholic 2nd), and the 4x200 (Girls' High of Philadelphia was 4th and West Catholic 5th). Girls High won the 4x800. Chester took 2nd in the 4x400. West Catholic was 3rd in the shuttle hurdles. And Jordan Muse, Girls High, was 2nd in the triple jump. From Day One action, Brittany Jackson of Girls' High in Philadelphia won the mile, while teammates Gabrielle Gaines and Jasmine Wanamaker placed well in the 55 hurdles and 200, respectively. Girls' High of Philadelphia took firsts in the Mile with Brittaney Jackson, and in the 4x800. At the ROBERT J. BURDETTE INDOOR CLASSIC @ Lehigh University, there were a lot of dropped jaws after several of the performances at this always-deep meet. The fact that one of the more shocked individuals happened to be one of the athletes may come as a surprise. All junior Chanelle Price of Easton did was pull off a triple that included three meet records and set the stage for more indoor performances that could have all-time implications. Price started her day with a solo 2:08.76 800 that would have been the fourth best nationally last indoor. The mark is four seconds better than she started her sophomore indoor campaign, and within two seconds of the US-best ever by a prep athlete. "I shocked myself," Price says. "To be three months ahead of last year, that is really surprising." Price is looking to set the US junior class record this season, and has her sights set on the 2:03-04 range for outdoor. But it was her next two races that added to the impressiveness of the day. She anchored the DMR to a meet record with a 5:01.4 anchor. And then she dropped a 55.8 anchor on the final race of the day, with Easton awarded a 4:00.00 win in the 4x400. There were several other juniors who were quite impressive, and their names should be no surprise. Methacton's Ryann Krais won the 400. She then anchored the 4x200 to a win with her lap of 24.7 after spotting a 35 meter advantage on the exchange. Also setting the stage for a big year from Easton was Abby Schaffer in the Pole Vault. Junior Karen Shump, Penncrest, won the Shot Put. And West Catholic's Simone Carter captured the 60-200 sprint double. Upper Darby's Bintou Dibba took the Triple Jump. And for those keeping score at home, Easton also got winning contributions from Tara Bright in the 60 Hurdles, and in the Sprint Medley, which they won. For the boys, Brandon Bing of Cheltenham also pulled off the same double as Carter. Norristown set a meet record in the 4x200. William Tennent's Jay Pittenger set a meet record in the high jump. Simon Gratz junior Khaliff Featherstone won the 400. Elliot Rhodes of Germantown Academy and Upper Darby's Rob McNally battled in the 800. Phoenixville's Tony Shirk captured the Pole Vault. Bradford made the five-hour trip worthwhile with two strong 2nd place showings... to Great Valley in the 4x800 and to Simon Gratz in the 1600 Sprint Medley Relay. Three guys bettered 50 in the Shot Put, led by Chestnut Hill Academy's Wayne Crawford.
