1/6 INDOOR WEEK #6 SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, the TSTCA held two single event meets... the POLE VAULT COMPETITION at Butler HS and the TRIPLE JUMP COMPETITION at Robert Morris University. Pine Richland's Zach Merverden cleared 14-06 to move into PA#2. Sky Sankey of Butler won the girls pole vault. Mike Martin of Butler was close to 43' to win. Melissa Alauzen of Canon McMillan closed in on 35' to win the girls' competition. On Thursday at the STATE COLLEGE INVITATIONAL, Pole vaulter Andrew Campalongo PRed and moved into PA#3. State College's Edel Crowe won the distance double. On Friday, at the DVGTCA INDOOR MEET #4 @ Kutztown University, Council Rock North moved into the PA#2 spot with a winning sub 12:45 DMR. Joining them under 12:50 were Saint Basil's, Archbishop Prendergast and Methacton. Ryann Krais worked on one of her multis events, winning the high jump. Karen Shump of Penncrest stayed in the upper-40's with a throw of near 47' in the shot put. And Downingtown West junior Christen Arnold long-jumped well over 17'. On Friday at the COLGATE WOMEN'S GAMES HS WK #2, in New York, Engineering & Science showed they will have a strong team for indoor states. Syeeda Gee won the HS 1500, with teammate Kasia Taylor in 3rd. Goines took 4th in the 400 with teammate Benita Taylor 6th. Taylor, Gee and and Taylor were also sub-2:30 in the 800. Also on Friday, at the EMREY/ESU WARRIOR CLASSIC @ East Stroudsburg University, Harrisburg smoked a PA#1 3:28.0 4x400. Easy to see how, when they also took the top two spots in the open 400. Anita James of Pocono Mountain West was over 17' in the long jump. Tiera Smith of Harrisburgh was under a minute to take the two lapper. At the CITIBANK HISPANIC GAMES at the New York Armory, Cheltenham senior Brandon Bing introduced himself to the 2007 national scene by taking two races, the 55 and 200 (US#1). Bing beat some great competition, including Simon Gratz junior Khaliff Featherstone, 5th in the 200. Featherstone took second in the finals of the 400, the fourth fastest time on the day. Neshaminy's Chad Sargeant was 5th in the Invitational 400. Neshaminy's Tim Bech had a great day, garnering a 5th in the triple jump to go with a 4th in the long jump. For the girls, Hatboro-Horsham's Kerry Swayne won the mile, while Swenson's Shanae Bailey was 2nd in the 200. At Saturday's TSTCA INDOOR MEET #1@ the University of Pittsburgh, the throws were, as always, out there. There is a new #1 in the state in the shot put, as Hempfield senior Westin Banks unleashed a throw over 57'. Riversides's Denes Veres and Peters Township's Nate Janusey were over 51 and 50 feet, respectively. Hempfield junior Kim Kanala won the girls shot, going over 39'. Pittsburgh Central Catholic's Scott Van Kooten split 4:34 to bring his DMR team back for the win. Both Sean Gil, North Allegheny, and Zach Meverden, Pine Richland, cleared 14' in the pole vault. At the KUTZTOWN INVITATIONAL @ Kutztown Universithy, Chanelle Price of Easton sent more shockwaves through the state and beyond following her 12/29 Burdette Classic performance. She became the first PA girl to go under five this season. Second in the race was Central Cambria junior Carly Seymour. She most likely would have been closer to Price, but it was Seymour's second race of the day. She won the meet's opening event, the 3000, in one of the top times in the state. Price also contributed to the quick 4x400, with Easton winning in a sub-4 effort. In the boys' competition, Joe Kovacs of Bethlehem Catholic improved his PA#2 ranking in the shot put. At the TFCAGP D1 INDOOR MEET #5 @ Haverford College, Glen Mill's Bernard Goodwyn ripped the 400. North Penn's Chris Dollinger was sub-23 to take the 200. Coatesville got their legs under them again after a grueling XC campaign, winning the DMR, with Hatboro-Horsham just over five seconds back. Jay Pittenger continued his strong high jumps, In the 60 hurdles, Archbishop Ryan's Kashif Thompson posted a PA#1 tie. At the TFCAGP D2 INDOOR MEET #5 @ Haverford College, there were some pretty impressive meet records rewritten. The DMR mark of 10:41.1 was set in 1987 by Penncrest. Well, Wissahickon and West Chester Henderson both crushed it. Penn Charter's Dareem David broke the 2003 meet record of 6.9 by Conwell-Egan's Steve Slaton in the 60 dash. Chestnut Hill Academy's Wayne Crawford neared his season best in the shot put. At the LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE INDOOR MEET #1, two girls cleared 5-04, including Katie Butler of Central Dauphin and Christy Johnson of State College. Tory Toso of Wilson (West Lawn) opened her campaign with a 11-0 clearance in the pole vault. New Oxford distance runner Jordan Jenkins won the 1600 in under 5:19. Chambersburg junior MJ Davis won the 55 dash and triple jump. Chambersburg sophomore David Eubanks won both the 800 and 1600 meter runs, and Indian Valley junior Brooke Mathews won the 55 and 200 dashes. On 1/8 at the CHESTER COUNTY INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS at Ursinus College, Kaleena Gray of Coatesville continued her strong season, throwing over 41'to win the shot put. Christen Arnold of Downingtown West was over 17' again in the long jump. Henderson's Carly Hamond broke 5:20 in the mile. And Conestoga's Ashley Niness had a strong race with Coatesville's Danielle Lambert in the 400. On 1/9 at the DELCO GIRLS INDOOR CHAMPS @ Haverford College, junior Karen Shump of Penncrest showed that her retirement from softball continues to pay dividends as she flirts with beating her outdoor shot put PR, indoors. At her home championships, she threw over 47 for the third time this season. Penn Wood's girls posted the best 4x200 in the state so far, holding off Chester by just .7. And Upper Darby and Ridley were within two seconds as well. Archbishop Carroll freshman Amanda Bascelli posted the fastest 3000 of the year.

Pole vaulter Andrew Campalongo PRed and moved into PA#3 with a 14-03 effort. Teammate Alex Kenney went 22.9 to win the 200. Altoona's Adam Kennedy ran 51.2 to take the 400. State College's Edel Crowe won the distance double, going 5:31.7 in the mile and 11:15.1 for 3000 meters.

Engineering & Science will have a strong team for indoor states as evidenced by their performances during the Friday night series at Pratt Institute. Syeeda Gee won the HS 1500 in 4:49.8, with teammate Kasia Taylor in 3rd at 4:59.2. Upper Dublin runner Alexandra Brasington was 4th in 5:03.6. Goines took 4th in the 400 in 59.5 with teammate Benita Taylor 6th in 1:00.1. Strawberry Mansion's Seanna Hipps ran 1:01.3. Taylor also posted a 2:24.5 800; Gee a 2:26.6 and Taylor a 2:29.4.

The DMR is going to be a great addition to the state meet. Council Rock North moved into the PA#2 spot with a winning 12:42.6. Joining them under 12:50 were Saint Basil's, Archbishop Prendergast and Methacton. Ryann Krais worked on one of her multis events, winning the high jump with a 5-04 clearance. Karen Shump of Penncrest stayed in the upper-40's with a throw of 46-11.25 in the shot put. And Downingtown West junior Christen Arnold long-jumped 17-06.50.

Harrisburg smoked a PA#1 3:28.0 4x400. Easy to see how, when they also took the top two spots in the open 400, as Joshua Pitts went 50.5 and Kaseem Ingram 51.6. Harrisburg's Matt Davis covered 22-01 to take second to a NJ athlete. Anita James of Pocono Mountain West leapt 17-03 in the long jump. Tiera Smith of Harrisburgh ran 59.6 to take the two lapper.

Cheltenham senior Brandon Bing introduced himself to the 2007 national scene by taking two races at the huge meet at the New York Armory. With his 6.48 in the 55, followed by a quick, and US#1, 21.81 around the banked track, Bing beat some great competition, including Simon Gratz junior Khaliff Featherstone, 5th in the 200 in 22.50. Featherstone took second in the finals of the 400, running 49.41, the fourth fastest time on the day. Neshaminy's Chad Sargeant was 5th in the Invitational 400 in 50.01. His teammate Tim Bech had a great day, garnering a 5th in the triple jump with a leap of 44-05.75. He Also was 4th in the long jump, going 21-05.50, and posted an 8.47 in the 55 Hurdles. For the girls, Hatboro-Horsham's Kerry Swayne won the mile in 5:13.22. Swenson's Shanae Bailey was 2nd in the 200 in a fast 24.89.

Chanelle Price of Easton is sending shockwaves through the state and beyond with her torrid start to the indoor campaign. She followed up her incredible day at the 12/29 Burdette Classic with a 4:58.62 1600, the first to go under five this season. Second in the race was Central Cambria junior Carly Seymour, going 5:13.20. She most likely would have been closer to Price, but it was Seymour's second race of the day. She won the meet's opening event, the 3000, in 10:35. Price also contributed to the quick 4x400, with Easton winning in 3:58.89. In the boys' competition, Joe Kovacs of Bethlehem Catholic improved his PA#2 ranking with a throw of 55-03.75.

The high jump is looking good through early January. Two girls cleared 5-04 at this meet, including Katie Butler of Central Dauphin and Christy Johnson of State College. Tory Toso of Wilson (West Lawn) opened her campaign with a 11-0 clearance in the pole vault. New Oxford distance runner Jordan Jenkins won the 1600 in 5:18.18. MJ Davis, a Chambersburg junior, won the 55 in a hand-timed 6.4 seconds, and also the triple jump, leaping 43-05. Chambersburg sophomore David Eubanks won both the 800 and 1600 meter runs, going 2:06.9 and 4:40.27, respectively. And Indian Valley junior Brooke Mathews won the 55 in 7.3 and the 200 in 27.4.

Coatesville got their legs under them again after a grueling XC campaign, winning the DMR in 10:54.5. Hatboro-Horsham was just over five seconds back. Jay Pittenger continued his strong high jumps, clearing 6-06 for the win. In the 60 hurdles, Archbishop Ryan's Kashif Thompson posted a PA#1 tie 8.2 in the finals.

PARTIAL RESULTS POSTED
Some pretty impressive meet records went down in the afternoon meet at Haverford College. The DMR mark of 10:41.1 was set in 1987 by Penncrest. Well, Wissahickon and West Chester Henderson both crushed it, with Wissahickon anchored by Nick Crits to a 10:31.3. Henderson was in at 10:32.7, with West Chester East 3rd in 10:44.8. Penn Charter's Dareem David broke the 2003 meet record of 6.9 by Conwell-Egan's Steve Slaton in the 60 dash with a 6.8. Chestnut Hill Academy's Wayne Crawford neared his season best with a throw of 56-05 in the shot put.

No one should be surprised about the level of talent in the throws in western PA. There is a new #1 in the state in the shot put, as Hempfield senior Westin Banks unleashed a throw of 57-06.50. Riversides's Denes Veres and Peters Township's Nate Janusey were over 51 and 50 feet, respectively. Hempfield junior Kim Kanala won the girls shot with a throw of 39-02.50. Bill Nguyen of Baldwin leapt 21' in the long jump, and Pittsburgh Central Catholic's Scott Van Kooten split 4:34 to bring his DMR team back for the win in 11:16.0. Pittsburgh Central's 4x400 team also came from way back to win after a dropped baton. Both Sean Gil, North Allegheny, and Zach Meverden, Pine Richland, cleared 14' in the pole vault.

Kaleena Gray of Coatesville is solidly in the 40's this season, throwing 41-07 to win the shot put at her county champs. Christen Arnold of Downingtown West is on training pace with her 2nd best long jump of the season, 17-05.75. Henderson's Carly Hamond went 5:19.25 to take the mile. And Conestoga's Ashley Niness had a strong race with Coatesville's Danielle Lambert in the 400, edging Lambert for the win 59.97-1:00.67.

Junior Karen Shump of Penncrest showed that her retirement from softball continues to pay dividends as she flirts with beating her outdoor shot put PR, indoors. At her home championships, she threw over 47's for the third time this season, going 47-03.50. With her softball pitching days behind her for the first time in her high school career, her marks this season are evidence that the change has had a positive effect. Penn Wood's girls posted the best 4x200 in the state so far, going 1:47.2, holding off Chester by just .7. And Upper Darby and Ridley were within two seconds as well. Throw in Swenson's sub 1:48 from the Hispanic Games in NY, and the 4x200 at States is setting up to be silly fast. Archbishop Carroll freshman Amanda Bascelli posted the fastest 3000 of the year with here 10:32.8. Chester's Shaniel Chambers cruised to a 2:17.3 800 win. And Radnor's Hannah Granger held off Prendie's Erica Matticola and teammate June Farley by less than a second in the Mile, running 5:22.0.
