1st Annual Knoch Relays

Highlights by Phil Grove:

People outgrow many things over the passage of time – clothes, cars and even houses.

Jordan Geist gave notice at Saturday’s inaugural Knoch Relays that his powerful right arm might be too much for some shot put sectors to contain, blasting a state-leading and US#12 performance of 61 feet, 4 inches.

Only a freshman, Geist did not waste any time in showing that four throws at his home facility would result in record-breaking marks. His opening heave of 57-5.5 broke Knoch’s varsity record of 54-9.5 from 1984, and that was just the start.

“My opening throw, I never go full out, maybe 70-80 percent,” said Geist, who finished second in the 2014 PTFCA state indoor championships at Penn State. “Throwing 57 on that, I knew I was going to hit a big one coming through.”

The second time in the ring was the keeper for the 15-year-old. Nailing his technique, Geist had a good look at the 12-pound ball as it traveled down the middle of the sector and almost landed on the grass surrounding the throwing area.

“It’s cold today, it’s hard to stay warm, but once I got nice and warmed up, I got a good technical throw,” Geist said of his 61-footer. “It just felt right coming out. I knew it was going to be good.”

Geist added marks of 53-6 and 56-1.5 to dominate the relay-style field of three throwers per school that also included senior Alec Rideout of Canon-McMillan. Rideout, who was sixth at the state indoor meet four weeks ago with a PR 55-5.25, was next best at 51-1.5 under cloudy, breezy conditions.

On the track, Canon-McMillan cranked out a PA#8 clocking of 3:33.59 in the boys’ 4x400 relay and was an easy winner in the distance medley in 11:23.92. Butler was quick in the sprint relays, running 44.82 in the 4x100 relay and crossing first in the 4x200 in 1:34.35.

In the girls’ track relays, Seneca Valley closed out the meet with a 4:19.43 in the 4x400, while Canon-McMillan turned in a PA#10 51.13 in the 4x100. Avonworth-Northgate dominated the distance events, covering the 4x800 in 10:19.05 and registering a PA#5 13:14.83 in the DMR.

39th Annual Altoona Igloo Invitational

Altoona Area

Meet Feature by Sharon Weisner:

The Altoona Igloo Invitational lived up to its name as competitors battled cold, wind, and rain. Despite the conditions, the incredible Altoona staff made it a memorable experience for spectators and runners alike as several noteworthy performances were produced at this early season meet.

Homer Center: They do have a boys’ team

After playing basketball all winter, the Capitosti brothers of Homer Center did a number on the jumping events in their first meet of the season. John, a sophomore, won the high jump as the only competitor to clear 6’2. He added a second win in the long jump with a mark of 19’10. In the long jump, he was hoping to jump at least 20’1, but given the weather conditions and the fact that he took his final attempts just moments after the completion of the high jump, John was satisfied with the day’s results, but is far from complacent for the season. Meanwhile, senior brother Joe was just as busy, jumping 6’0 to take third in the high jump. He added a fourth place finish with his triple jump of 39’7. It was a great start for what could be a memorable season for the brothers.

Vaulting to New Heights

Penn State commit Hannah Mulhern of Altoona vaulted 12'4 to win the pole vault. She bettered her old meet record of 11'3 while also improving upon her previous personal best of 12'3 and setting a new school record. Weather conditions prevented Hannah from dusting off her pole before last week, but it was not evident. A few run-throughs at practice were enough to set her up for a promising start to her season.

Other News:

After missing his cross country and indoor track seasons due to injury, Brent Kennedy of Kiski Area showed that he was back by winning the 3200 in 9:31.96.

Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic won the 400 in a 58.14, cruised to the 3200 win in 11:03, and ran the lead off leg of ECC’s victorious 4x400 relay.

Highlights by Lex Mercado:

Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic successfully completed the 400 (58.14) and 3200 meter double (11:03.90). Hannah Mulhern of Altoona cleared a state leading 12-4 to win the pole vault. Brooke Hinderlitter of Redbank threw 135-5 to win the javelin. Freshman Alli Wyland of Hollidaysburg won the 100 (12.48) and 200 meter dashes (27.10).

For the boys, Brent Kennedy of Kiski Area ran a state leading 9:31.96 to win the 3200 meter run. Altoona ran 43.41 to win the 4x100 meter relay and 3:27.63 to win the 4x400 meter relay. Gus Yahner of Northern Cambria cleared 14-6 to win the pole vault. David Lucas of Warwick threw a state leading 170-2 to win the discus.
