2/17 INDOOR WEEK #12 SUMMARY

At the PTFCA INDOOR STATE CHAMPS @ Penn State, Chanelle Price puts on a show termed "greatest indoor PA performance ever", the record will show that Easton won the girls team title. And the word team applies. It's never a one person achievement. But the record will also show that one athlete put on a performance that few who witnessed will ever forget. Fellow junior star Ryann Krais led her team to 2nd by taking two individual events and a runner-ups in a third individual and a relay. Jason Weller of Boyertown attempted, survived and thrived in a previously impossible distance triple. McDowell wins the boys' title. Also on Saturday at the WV FLYERS INDOOR MEET #3, Katherine Ward of State College finished 2nd in the 3200 in 11:33.38. Tim Wertner of Greencastle-Antrim took 1st in the 1600 in 4:30.94 and 2nd in the 3200. State College's Rick Koubek was 2nd in the 1600 in 4:36.87. Bethany Walker of Ellwood City, took 3rd in the 1600 in 5;25.11. On Tuesday night at the 70th EASTERN STATES CHAMPIONSHIPS @ the NY Armory, Cheltenham senior Brandon Bing followed up his US#1 21.52 at PTFCA States with a 21.72 3rd place finish three days later in NY. Hatboro-Horsham's Joe Berry improved on states with a 15-00 pole vault, 2nd in a jump-off. LaSalle College HS was 3rd in the 4x800, going 7:59.92. Paul Robeson's Gehian Regis ran 8.44 in the the prelims of the 55 hurdles.

Athlete of the Meed: Jason Weller, Boyertown, was 2nd in the mile,
won the 3000 and anchored a 7th in the DMR.

The record will show that Easton won the girls team title. And the word team applies. It's never a one person achievement. But the record will also show that one athlete put on a performance that few who witnessed will ever forget.

Chanelle Price's day by the numbers tells a lot of the story. We'll tell more of the story over the next few days.

5:06.74 Mile. State Champion. 2:04.96 800. #3 US All-Time (and obviously a PA State Meet Record). State Champion. 2:08 anchor contributing to a 9:18.77 4x800. State Champion. And 53.6 anchor contributing to a 3:51.82 4x400. State Champion.

And Female Athlete of the Meet.

Paul Springer, Unionville, set a state meet record in the Mile.

But first some other highlights from the meet. Easton finished ahead of 2nd place Methacton, which was led by Price's fellow super junior Ryann Krais. Krais experienced a rare off day in the hurdles in between winning two individual events to go with her 2nd in the 60 hurdles. Her 56.22 won the 400, and her 18-00.50 long jump was also the top performance. She also anchored the team to a come-from-behind 2nd place 3:57.89 in the 4x400. Final score, Easton 64, Methacton 37.50. Hughesville's Rachel Househecht edged Krais 8.85 to 8.86 with a strong close after the next-to-last hurdle.

Carly Seymour, Central Cambria, used a fast closing 800 to top the PA 3000 chart with a 10:09.14.

In the 4x200, Harrisburg ran away with a win in 1:42.74. Liberty's Beki Finn broke up the Easton string with a 12-06 state title. Archbishop Ryan's Nohjay Nimpson upped her state-leading triple jump with a leap of 38-09, good for a state title. Penncrest's Karen Shump had a nice series in the 47's, capped by a 47-11.75 to win the indoor crown. Coatesville's Kaleena Gray PRed at 44-06.50. West Catholic's Simone Carter won the 60 in 7.69 and took 2nd in the 200 to Brittany Wallace, Penn Wood, 24.80 to 24.96. Rebekah Newhart, Hughesville, cleared 5-07 to take the high jump.

The first-ever Distance Medley Relay is a nice transition from the girls to the boys because West Chester Henderson can lay claim to first for both. The girls ran 12:22.27 to beat Radnor by a little over a second. The boys used a punishing 400 from Tim Shea to open an nearly insurmountable lead as Chris Ferry put down the hammer to close it out after Nick Crits of Wissahickon had closed the gap entering the final lap. The time was 10:21.56.

The Male Athlete of the Meet with the Ironman who attempted, survived and thrived on a mile-3000-DMR mile diet. Boyertown's Jason Weller, who won this year's Millrose Mile, ran a PR of 4;15.14. Unfortunately for him, Unionville's Paul Springer also PRed, and in doing so set a State Meet Record of 4:12.61 (more on this race tomorrow). Weller came back in the 3000, and despite being somewhat off record-setting pace, ran one of the three fastest 3000's in PA history, going 8:26.21. He also anchored the 7th place DMR. (more on this race as well).

McDowell's Brice Myers shaved a whopping .17 off his state-leading 8.17 to win the 60 hurdles. The win contributed ten points toward the ultimate title, the team championship. McDowell's 35 points were six better than Neshaminy, and eight better than Glen Mills. McDowell also got key points from Emmanuel Overare, 2nd in the triple jump at 47-00.25 (Kiski's Garner McCloud went 47-09 for the win), and Chad Noce's 3rd place 57-08.75 in the shot put. That's the same event where, when crunch time arrived on the last throw of the finals, Hemfpield's Weston Banks uncorked a huge 62-02.75 to beat previous state leader Wayne Crawford of Chestnut Hill Academy at 60-03.50.

In the relays, Harrisburg took the 4x20 in 1:29.40; Cumberland Valley closed out the meet by taking the 4x400 in 3:22.56; and North Penn showed that when presented with a banked track, they were indeed the fastest 4x800 in the state with a 7:56.71.

Cheltenham's Brandon Bing remounded from a false start in the finals of the 60 dash to take the 200 in a US-leading 21.52. Toney Clemons of Valley leapt 23-01.25 to take the long jump. Sean Gil, North Allegheny, cleared 15-00 to capture the pole vault. Jay Pittenger, William Tennent, won the high jump at 6-08.
