4/21 OUTDOOR WEEK #4 SUMMARY:

Apparently, it was no big deal... because the first gorgeous weekend for meets resulted in performances worthy of any season, early or late. At the AA-AAA formatted SHIPPENSBURG INV, there were unexpected PRs, a 4-event winner, a huge disc and jav (from the same person), a sub-five mile and sub 2:17 800 (from a different same person), some pre-state previews of hot sprint match-ups, and two smokin' 4x400's by the same school.
At the MOON MIXED RELAYS, North Allegheny won seven events to win the unique two-boys, two girls team format, with Seneca Valley taking four and garnering 2nd as a team.

No matter where you live in PA, the early spring has been less than cooperative for training. Apparently, it was no big deal... because the first gorgeous weekend for meets resulted in performances worthy of any season, early or late. There were unexpected PRs, a 4-event winner, a huge disc and jav (from the same person), a sub-five mile and sub 2:17 800 (from a different same person), some pre-state previews of hot sprint match-ups, and two smokin' 4x400's by the same school. The action was non-stop and made the 9 AM - 7 PM meet fly (it was the drive home that really dragged.)
New ring. New PR. New expectations.
Whitehall senior Andy Fahringer came into the meet hoping to repeat a dual meet performance earlier in the week where he threw the javelin over 200'. He got the lead in the prelims with a mid-190's effort, but entered the finals with a narrow edge on sophomore star Justin Shirk of Central Dauphin, and Williamsport's Zach Barr. Shirk had thrown 194-1 in the prelims, and was in 2nd. But Barr popped a 195-11 on his first throw of the finals, and the heat was on. Shirk responded with a throw in the 196-197 range - a throw that would have given him the lead - but he stepped off the runway before the official called "mark," and the throw was disallowed. Fahringer stepped up for his final throw, still holding the lead, but more concerned with building confidence for this week's Penn Relays javelin with a 200-foot effort. " I didn't press, and just worried about hitting my positions. I hit them all and finally got that jarring feeling my coach talks about... the one where you feel like you stepped off a curb when you didn't expect to. I felt it in my whole body." 202-1 inch later he had his goal. "That makes twice over 200 in a week. That's where I wanted to be."
Fahringer then stepped over the he discus circle. Actually, the brand new discus circle and cage - one designed to handle the hammer as well as the disc. Fahringer was impressed after his first warmup. "It's fast, and all winter I worked on my speed. You can really fly in there." And fly he did. On his first throw of the prelims he his a big PR of 182-06. That won the competition right there. Fahringer says the mechanics weren't perfect, so he decided to just let it rip. Five throws later he wasn't able to improve on the first effort, mainly because he "was pressing." But he was really pleased with the day. "182-179-171-169 is a nice series. I can't complain. Especially after competing in the jav.
Harrisburg's Joshua Potts takes the stick from
Matt Davis on the way to their 3:20.1 4x400
Harrisburg sparkles on the final races of the day.
The Harrisburg Cougars have more depth than ever, and a lot of experience. The girls won the AAA title, placing an exclamation point on their 81-point day with a meet record 3:56.84 4x400. Sheena Thomas led off with a 59.10, followed by Lhayana Dallas in 58.11, Carlysha Townes 1:00.30 and anchor Alysha Cook in 58.87. "And that's maybe not our strongest team" says head coach Angel Doyle. "We're have some good competition for those spots." Looking through the rest of the results, you can see that the squad can indeed get faster. Tiera Smith won the open 400 in a strong 57.38. Dallas was coming off a tiring day, winning both hurdle events, going 14.93 for 100 and 44.32 for 300. And Cook had been busy as well, running trials of the 100 before finishing 3rd in 12.53, and winning the 200 in 25.21.
The Harrisburg guys - focused and all business for the final event, dominated from the gun. Kaseem Ingram took it out in 50.03, handed off toe Andre Clark, who went 49.82, followed by Matt Davis in 50.29 and then anchor Joshua Potts, who brought his lap home in 50.29 for a state-leading 3:20.01. That's fast any time of year. Bring on Penn!
Rotz is preparing for everything - slow start, quick start - with only one thing in mind, winning.
North Carolina-bound Andrew Rotz (left in the 800) of Central Dauphin is ahead of schedule. He had started the year running a strong mile at a meet in Chambersburg, but without the time and the right races, decided to abandon his goal of qualifying for the Penn Relays mile. "I know I was capable of 4:15 or faster, but it didn't work out." Some of his competitors in the 800 probably wish he had added the two laps, because if recent races are any indication, Rotz is taking dead aim at the 800 state title. A week ago at his home meet, he ran a solo 1:53.87. With some strong competition expected at Ship, fans were looking for something even faster. Rotz had anchored his team's 4x800 earlier in the day, splitting 1:53.6. After a tough week of training and meets, on top of his anchor, he decided to try a different strategy... "take the lead and slow it down and hold it until the end." The group split 60-point, and any hope of a low-1:50's was gone. But Rotz's plan worked. He took off with 300 to go and looked controlled as he came across in 1:54.53. His training includes long intervals of 600, 800, 1000 and 1200 meters. He has also run 49-low for 400. And it's all part of the plan, a plan to he hopes will help him to achieve his goal of breaking the AAA meet record of 1:50.31. "I have been experimenting with going out in 56-57 and then like today, slower. I want to be prepared for any kind of race."
Spence is rewriting her track resume... and not in permanent ink.
Neely Spence is once again running for her local high school. The homeschooled junior first competed for Shippensburg last fall after a state law mandated that all local districts make extracurricular activities open to homeschoolers. When last we saw her in a Ship uniform, she was winning the state XC title before moving on to Foot Locker Nationals where she finished 8th, earning all-American status. Well, it seems as if regulators at all levels really want Spence to run for Ship. With a pre-season goal of racing well in the 2-mile at June's Nike Outdoor Nationals, Spence was training for the longer stuff, running as an unattached athlete in a college meet in Virginia where she PRed in the 1500 (4:37.71) and 3000 (10:02.89). But NCAA Division I rules changed at the end of March, precluding their athletes from competing in the same race as high school athletes. Change in plans for Spence... back to Ship. "I really like the distance girls, so it's been a good move."
With dual meets added to her training, Spence has been concentrating on shorter stuff - especially the mile. The Shippensburg Invitational was the perfect opportunity to see where she stood. With 1500 and 3000 PRs on the books, Spence is looking to get a stronger track resume than she took into last year's Foot Lockers. "Cross is my favorite, and during introductions at Foot Lockers, all the other girls had faster times." Spence obviously wasn't intimidated by the times of the other competitors, because she knew she had beaten many with the same credentials. "But I feel by improving my times, it will help me with speed, strength and confidence."
She is well on her way after Saturday. Two more races, and two more PRs. First the 1600. "I wanted to run even splits and run strong." With the pace dropping off before the halfway point, Spence took over at 600 meters. She came through in 2:30 for 800 and 3:47.5 for 1200. Her final 4:56.52 was the first PR.
In the 800, Spence came through a lap in just under 70, and stayed on Cumberland Valley senior Abby Huber, who was pushing the pace. Behind by a few meters rounding the final turn, Spence kept contact, looked down briefly, and gutted out a sprint to pass and hold off Huber by a nose. 2:16.73 to 2:16.82.
She now undecided about possible races at Nike Outdoor Nationals. It could be anything from the mile to the 5000. But there is no doubt about where she's aiming for States. It'll be the mile. She's hoping her resume needs another important update after that race.
Other stars showed their talents and new ones emerged...
GIRLS
Lara Crofford of Big Spring is having a career year. She hung with Spence and Morrison in the 1600 and eventually finished 3rd in 5:03.16. But she saved her push for the 3200 where she ran solo to a state-leading 10:42.61. Liberty's Beki Finn cleared 11-9 to take the pole vault. Cedar Crest's Casey Krause leapt 18-00 for the win. Altoona sophomore Bethany Lender upped her state-leading triple jump mark to 37-04.25. And two girls put the shot over 40', with Altoona's Lynette Howard taking the honors over Carlisle's Kacey James by two inches, tossing 40-04. James also won the javelin with a throw of 132-07 and was 2nd in the discus. The state record holder in the javelin, Karlee McQuillen of Westmont-Hilltop didn't have the day she envisioned. She was challenged in the prelims by Penn Valley's Rebekah Leitzel, who threw a big PR of 137-04. McQuillen fouled on her first throw of the prelims and needed her throw of 141-11 to take the win. Her coach Will Aurandt said it was unusual for McQuillen to take six throws, but that at the end of the day she had topped 140' on four of her six. "That was one real positive to take from the competition," he said. "And the other is that going into this week's Penn Relays, she is actually three weeks ahead of last year." She has already thrown over 157', and the 140+ series is a "good sign" of things to come, said Aurandt.
BOYS
Trinity is built a strong team, and they're putting up marks that rank among the top in the state. David Smith ran 49.80 to win the 400. Shane Seymour went 1:56.68 in the 800. Their 4x400 posted a 3:27.68, while their 4x800 ran 8:11.36. The AA javelin was won by Greenwood's Jordan Myers with a big throw of 184-01. And Travis Dean of Westmont Hilltop won the 3200 in 9:42.54, and took 2nd to Meyersdale's Mike Podlesnik with a 4:23.02 in the 1600, who ran 4:22.88. The AAA sprint wars got a good preview as Altoona's AJ Alexander led his team to the win, taking the 100 in 10.89 to hold off Cumberland Valley's Juan Steward, 2nd in 10.91. Steward returned the favor in the 200, going 21.95 to better Alexander's 22.23. AJ also took 2nd in the long jump, going 22-04, and anchored the 4x100 to a come-from-behind 43.29 win. Harrisburg ran 43.38 for 2nd. In addition to that win, Harrisburg's Potts also ran 49.82 to beat Cumberland Valley's Josh Shumberger, who was credited with the same time. Gettysburg's Bryan Beegle pulled off an impressively fast double, winning the 1600 in 4:20.72 and the 3200 in 9:31.03. Norristown's Pete Selby went 14.69 to win the 110 hurdles, and was 2nd to Lower Dauphin's Michael Brown in the 300, 39.01 to 39.26. Cumberland Valley showed their 4x800 in on track again this year, running 7:56.20. Waynesboro's Terrell Rickard cleared 6-06 in the high jump. And Carlisle's Aaron Whetstone leapt 46-07.75 in the triple jump.

4/21 OUTDOOR WEEK #4 PREVIEW:
Highlighting the weekend...
At the huge Shippensburg Inv, schools will compete in AA and AAA classes.. While there are a lot of great match-ups, the AAA 800 should be smokin' as Central Dauphin's Andrew Rotz (in photo by John Gayman), will have strong competition. He ran 1:53.87 last week, much faster than he was running at this time last year. Big meets too in Butler, Lock Haven, Great Valley, Hickory, Solanco, California (PA), West Lawn and Philly. And Methacton sends athletes to the invitational javelin and discus at the New York Relays on Randall's Island. Buckle up. The weather will be warm and the competiton hot. We have photographers at both days of Butler. I will be at Ship. And we'll have video and pix from Great Valley.
