U.S. Sophomore class record at Cocalico: In two years, javelin specialist Justin Shirk of Central Dauphin HS has set two U.S. Class Records. On Saturday July 7 in the Long & Strong Throwers Classic at Cocalico High School in Lawn (Lebanon County), Shirk threw the jav 219-04, a PR by 4' 3", which he set at the recent USATF Junior Outdoor Champs.

On Saturday July 7 in the Long & Strong Throwers Classic at Cocalico High School in Lawn (Lebanon County), Shirk threw the jav 219-04, a PR by 4' 3", which he set at the recent USATF Junior Outdoor Champs. Shirk's throw betters the 218-01 mark set by Casey Kauffman of West Linn, Oregon in 2001. Shirk holds the U.S. freshman record at 207-05, thrown in a dual meet in 2006 at his home throws area. The mark will be verified by Track & News Boys HS Editor Jack Shepard. In the women's 15-18 discus, Penn Manor junior Alyssa Girvin won with a PR throw of 125-10.75. Garden Spot sophomore Kaitlyn DeFernelmont was 2nd with a throw of 117-10.50.
PA at the Pan-Am Juniors: Coming off her big win in the USATF Junior Outdoor Champs in late June, West Catholic grad and LSU freshman Latavia Thomas, took on all-comers at the Pan-American Juniors and won again. Her 2:06.59 was more than half a second ahead of Canada's Jessica Smith (2:07.27). Canada also took 3rd, as Sheila Reid ran 2:08.13, with the U.S. capturing 4th as Sarah Cocco ran 2:08.45. Thomas has run 2:03.89.
In Sunday's next-to-last race, PA's Thomas joined with Laurel Highlands grad and multiple PA state champ Breehana Jacobs, along with star sprinters Brandi Cross and Jessica Beard to win the 4x400 in 3:29.67.
On Day Six, Terence Lee (Juventus, Engineering & Science) won his second event of the meet, going 3:59.68 in the YM 1500 finals. Former Glen Mills runner Bernard Goodwyn of Delaware, took the YM 400 in 46.48, with fellow Mt. Airy teammates Khaliff Featherstone (Simon Gratz) and Austin Perron (Engineering & Science), 3rd and 7th in 47.15 and 48.03, respectively. Juventus' Harold Lamour, who had won the IB 3000 earlier in the meet, took 3rd in the 1500 finals in 4:11.12. Mt. Airy girls fared well in the sprint finals, as Shanae Bailey (Swenson), was 2nd in the IG 100 in 12.04; Chante Moore took 3rd in the YG 400 in 55.38; and Anthonia Ballard was 7th in the IG 400 hurdles in 1:04.47. Teammate Brandon Mercer ran 11.51 to take 4th in the YB 100. Juventus' Kasia Taylor (Engineering & Science) ran 4:59.72 for 6th in the IG 1500. And Devan Coon (Tri-County Express/Schuylkill Valley) PRed in the YW 400 finals, going 55.17. In the YG shot put (6lb), Mt. Airy's Spring Gamble was 6th. Teammates Nikko Brady (DE), was 3rd in the IG 100 Hurdles Finals, going 14.43, as Anthonia Ballard took 7th in 14.93. In the 4x400's Mt. Airy Young Men took home the championship with a blazing 3:09.35, thanks to Khaliff Featherstone (Simon Gratz), Bernard Goodwyn (DE), Austin Perron (Engineering & Science) and Elliot Rhodes (Germantown Academy). The IG girls took 2nd in 3:51.55, and the YG girls were 4th in 3:57.28. On Day Five, Shanae Bailey (Mt. Airy/Swenson) won the Intermediate Girls' 200 in 24.25. Devan Coon, Young Women (Tri-County Express/Schuylkill Valley) was 6th in her 200 finals in 24.54. Jamar Jones (Juventus/Engineergin & Science) and Elliot Rhodes (Mt. Airy/Germantown Academy) were one-two in the Young Men's 800 finals, running 1:52.17 and 1:52.43, respectively. Bailey also anchored Mt. Airy to the IG win in the 4x100, a 47.25. Their B team was 6th in 49.12. Mt. Airy also took 3rd in the YG 4x100 in 48.58. Juventus' Jenna Arnold was 6th in the YW 3000m fun in 11:10.03. In the IG 100 hurdles prelims, Anthonia Ballard (Mt. Airy) advanced to the finals with a 1:04.24. Mt. Airy's TC's Nikko Brady (DE) and Anthonia Ballard, advanced to the finals. In the Young Men's High Jump, Lewisburg's Graham Huber finished 4th, clearing 6-02.75.

On Day Four, starting the day, Shanae Bailey (Mt. Airy/Swenson), advanced in the Intermediate Girls 100 with a 12.52. Devan Coon of Tri-County Express (Schuylkill Valley HS), advanced to the finals of the Young Women's 400, running 57.73. In the Youth Girls, Chante Moore, Mt. Airy TC, advanced with her 57.24. Three Mt. Airy TC boys advanced in the Young Men's 400, with Bernard Goodwyn (Newark DE, formerly Glen Mills), going 47.36, Khaliff Featherstone (Simon Gratz) at 48.46, and Austin Perron (Engineering & Science) in at 48.80. In the 4x100 prelims, Mt. Airy advanced two teams in the Intermediate Girls, with the A team going 47.52 and the B team 49.18. In Young Women, Mt. Airy just missed advancing, going 48.88, while Tri-County Express ran 49.71. In the field, Saudiah Lawrence, Mt. Airy, took 8th in the IG long jump at 17-03.25. Sagenda Dallas, Mt Airy (Girls' High) leapt 37-05 for 5th in the YW triple jump. Butler's Skye Sankey was 5th in the YW pole vault, clearing 10-04. On Day Three of the USATF Youth Outdoor T&F Champs in Illinois, Terence Lee (Engin. & Sci. HS) and Harold Lamour, running for the Juventus Track Club of Philadelphia, each won their age group distance events. Lee took the 5000 in 15:57.05 in the Young Men group, while Lamour captured the Intermediate Boys 3000 in 9:18.95. In the 200 trials, Chante Moore, Mt. Airy TC, advanced to the finals in the Youth Girls, running 25.40; teammate Shanae-Latae Bailey (Swenson HS), ran 24.68, the top qualifier in the Intermediate Girls; and Devan Coon, Tri-County Elite/Schuylkill Valley HS, went 25.10 to advance in the Young Women's group. Advancing in the 800 trials were Jamar Jones (Juventus/Engineering & Science) and Elliot Rhodes (Mt. Airy/Germantown Academy), in 1:54.37 and 1:54.78, respectively. The Mt. Airy Youth Girls 4x400 advanced with a 4:05.65 in the 4x400. On Day Two, the Mt. Airy Young Men's 4x800 finished first in 8:07.25. Their Youth Girl's 4x800 took 4th in 10:05.85. At the Pan American Junior Athletics meet in Brazil, former West Catholic star Latavia Thomas, who now runs for LSU, will compete in the 800, while 2007 100-200-400 AAA state champ and Laurel Highlands grad Brehanna Jacobs, is on the team's 4x400 relay pool.
