Bruce Dallas Invitational: Just a day at the track - from the Carlisle Evening Sentinel

Left: Lewisburg teammates Sophia Ziemian (R) and Kiah Hardcastle, finished 1-2 in the 3200, Ziemian getting the meet record of 11:03.27. Hardcastle ran 11:05.11. Right: Kalyn Fisher set a MR in the 800 after anchoring Lewisburg to a MR in the 4x800.

It was definitely early April. Cool. A bit breezy. A mix of clouds and sun. But for April – and specifically, the recent history of the 7-year-old Bruce Dallas Invitational at Cumberland Valley HS – it was incredible weather. So nice in fact, that meet records dropped at every turn, on every runway, and in every circle. The meet has endured snow, hail and driving rains. There have even been thunderstorms. "We were expecting locusts this year," deadpanned meet director and CV head coach Bill Bixler. "But we'll take it."

Fans didn't have to wait long for the first record to fall. The Lewisburg girls came to run, and the pounced all over the opening 4x800. Casey Miller led off with a 2:21.9. She was followed by a 2:24.5 leg by Kiah Hardcastle, and the 2:25.7 pentultimate leg by Sophia Ziemian. The record was within reach... and anchor Kalyn Fisher saw to it that it was history (by about 15 seconds) with a very quick 2:17.9 (in photo). The 8:30.11 is PA#2 to Gwynedd Mercy, which posted a 9:28.25 at Plymouth Whitmarsh on Saturday. Both are current US# 7 and 8, respectively.

The Lewisburg girls didn't back off. Ziemian and Hardastle would go one-two in the 3200, with Ziemian getting the meet record of 11:03.27, with Hardcastle right on her heels at 11:05.11. Fisher was even busier, leading the entire way to set a meet record of 2:21.47 in the 800, and then anchoring the 4x400 to a 3rd place 4:11.49. And Casey would finish 3rd in the 1600, running 5:17.98.

Cumberland Valley senior Juan Steward was on a mission in his final home invitational of his prep career. He started his day with the fastest qualifier in the 100 meter trials. His final came just a half hour before the 400, but his 11.38 winning effort was from the front the whole way. He had to go all out in the open one-lapper, setting a meet record of 49.74. Trinity's David Smith was credited with the same time, and now shares the meet record with Steward. There was no rest for the weary, as Steward came right back in the next event, anchoring the 4x100 to a 2nd place 44.03 (Methacton won in 43.70). Steward got a little rest before closing out his day with a 22.63 win in the 200.

Steward was not the only one garnering double records.

Lower Dauphin hurdler Michael Brown (In photo to right) use the short 110 trial and finals to his ultimate advantage, running a record 14.85. He followed that performance with a meet record 38.74. Both marks are PA#1's.

Coatesville senior Kaleena Gray (in photo below left) – who is headed to Norfolk State this coming fall – is getting into a good early groove. The discus and shot put are back-to-back at the Bruce Dallas Invitational, but Gray says that is normal operating procedure for her, because that's exactly what she does at practice and in dual meets. She started her two-meet-record day with a PA#1 133-00. The transition to the shot could have been smoother. Gray and Central Dauphin's Anna Muzio were the only two over 38 feet after the opening three tosses. And neither was over 40 feet. Gray was able to improve, going over 40 feet twice in the final three throws, with her best of 41-00.50 establishing the meet standard. Gray has some big goals for the season in both events. With college set and the final weeks of her prep career at hand, she says she is more focused than ever. Muzio was take 2nd with her 38-0, and her PR of 113-06 in the discus was also good for 2nd.

Schuylkill Valley athletes were winning events as well. Devan Coon (in photo below right) was entered in four events, and opened with a 2nd place 12.84 to Daniel Boone's Aubrie McAlpine, who ran 12.81. Coon came back with a strong anchor in the 4x100, which finished 5th in 52.25. She then powered her way to a 25.40 win in the 200, which is a current PA#1 and her best time since last summer. Coon closed out her day with a nearly spectacular come-from-behind win in the closing event, the 4x400. Giving up at least 20 meters to the leader, and in 4th place at the hand-off, Coon roared back and nearly caught the St. Basil anchor. Schuylkill Valley was clocked in 4:09.67, just over a second behind the new meet record of 4:08.45.

Erin Guty of Trinity, had a hand in two meet records... one individually and one with three teammates. Her 2nd leg of the 4x100 put the race away, as Trinity posted a PA#10 50.85. She also set the meet record in the long jump, going 17-06.

The other relay record on the day was the 3:27.56 4x400 by Cedar Crest's boys in the final event of the day.

Individually on the track, Courtney Whitmoyer of Schuylkill Valley ran a MR 59.85 in the 400. Trinity's Shane Seymore was wire-to-wire solo in his 1:58.22. And Boiling Springs senior Kara Millhouse followed up a 2:20 anchor on the 4x800 with a MR 5:14.53 in the 1600. She set the pace the first half, and then pulled away for the win.

In the high jump; despite the less than favorable winds, Lower Dauphin's Brittany Whitmer clear 5-4 for a meet record, and Lewisburg's Graham Huber was over at 6-6 for his meet mark. Indoor high jump champ Jabin Sheriff of Reading cleared 6-4 for 2nd, but did come away with a meet record of his own, sailing for 45-00.75 to win the triple jump.
