Girls' 60 Meter Hurdles Preview
State record holder Chanel Brissett of Cheltenham is the clear favorite in the hurdles. Last year, despite doubling in the 60 hurdles and 60 dash, Brissett managed to break her own state record and win in 8.25 (she eventually lowered that record to 8.23 at nationals). Brissett is doubling yet again, but Olympic Trials semifinalist is just on another level. Only disaster stands in the way of her and another state crown in the hurdles.
The battle for the other spots in that final and the medals will be fierce after Brissett. Upper Dublin's Madison Langley-Walker has just gotten better all season in the hurdles. Her 8.66 at the Meet of Champs was evident of that. Langley-Walker was second in the state last winter. Susquehanna Township's Yasmin Brooks is very strong, too. She's the reigning outdoor 300 hurdles state champ and she was second to Brissett at the Carnival, running 8.68.
Canon McMilan's Chyna Beck had a huge performance and PR of 8.86 at TSTCA Champs on Saturday to jet up to PA#4. North Allegheny's Melina Owens (also PA#4) and Oakland Catholic's Jayla Ellis (PA#7) have been a pair of strong TSTCA hurdlers this season. Ellis was fifth in the finals of the event as a freshman last year.
Speaking of returners from last year's final, we can't forget about Perkiomen Valley's Christina Warren. The sophomore is PA#6 in the 60 hurdles and PA#1 in the 55 hurdles after a win in 8.02 at Ocean Breeze earlier this season.
Others to watch for include Hempfield Area's Bailey Traczynski, Bentworth's Brenna Cavanaugh, Conestoga Valley's Jane Livingston, and Saint Basil's Sophia Barnett. This will not be an event you want to miss.
