AAA Girls' 100m Hurdles Preview
It's time for Chanel Brissett's final state meet. We watched the USC recruit go from a star sprinter to the greatest high hurdler in state history. She'll still be one to watch in the sprints (top seed in the 200 meters and 4x100), but the 100 meter hurdles are her top event.
Brissett ran 13.19 to set the PIAA meet record last spring and went on to run 12.95 at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Oregon. That tied the all-time state record. She comes in with a season best this year of 13.27, which ranks her US#3. At districts last week, with a full plate of other races, she ran a 13.35 in the prelims before coasting to the win in the finals. In her last state meet, could we see a very fast time?
Susquehanna Township's Yasmin Brooks enters the state meet as the returning state runner-up in the this event. She ran a best of 14.00 this year. Hanging with Brissett won't be easy, but Brooks did a good job of challenging her last year.
Perkiomen Valley's Christina Warren and Upper Dublin's Madison Langley-Walker help lead a strong District 1 contingent after Brissett. Both have been consistently around that mid-low 14s range and will be in the mix for medals. Newcomer Jane Livingston of Conestoga Valley has had an impressive first season. The sophomore ran a fast PR of 14.22 to take second to Brooks at District 3 last week.
In a close WPIAL final, Canon-McMilan's Chyna Beck edged out Oakland Catholic's Jayla Ellis and North Allegheny's Melina Owens. All three will be in the hunt for high finishes on the podium this weekend in the high hurdles.
