AA Girls' Shot Put Preview
Two-time state champion Tori McKinley left some big shoes to fill in the shot put. Last year, she threw 48 feet to win by over five feet. What we'll likely get this year, however, is a much closer competition for the top spot in AA.
The furthest throw by a AA girls this year belongs to North Clarion's Tori Obenrader, who tossed it 46-01 at the Redbank Invitational. But the District 9 champ's next best throw sits at 42 feet. If she can channel another 46 footer, or close to it, Obenrader will be very tough to beat. She was sixth last year.
The top seed coming into the meet is Maura Huwalt of South Park. The junior tossed lifetime best of 43-05 as part of a triple win day at WPIALs. That throw was also a foot better than her PR, so she's got some good momentum coming into the weekend.
Mallory Kauffman of Greenwood has been most consistent of the bunch. She threw 44-03 at Stan Morgan and then 44-10 to win the Tr-Valley League before a throw of 42-04.25 to win at District 3. Kauffman will be one to watch for in this competition.
The top returner from states last year is Michaela Burkhauser of Hickory. She placed fifth with a throw of 40-03.5. Burkhauser will look to keep the AA shot put title in house after throwing 40-08 (just a half inch off her season best) to win at the District 10 Champs. Trinity Clark of Kane Area is the only other returning medalist from last year. The District 9 runner-up threw a best of 40-07 this season.
United freshman Maizee Fry, Punxsutawney Area's Sam Dyson, Towanda's Jessica Tice, Lakeland's Mikayla Marino, and Penns Manor's Kate Polenik are among the other girls that have a good shot at making the medal stand.
