AA Girls' Discus Preview
Mallory Kauffman was already having a great season in the discus before this past weekend's District 3 Championships. But then the Greenwood junior popped a big throw of 146-10, nearly a five foot PR, showing she could be ready for an even better state meet. Last year, her best was 115-03, but Kauffman has turned herself into a legitimate state title threat.
The top returner from states last year, however, is Maura Huwalt of South Park. As a sophomore, she placed sixth, but she's been better this season. Huwalt threw a big PR of 145-01 to take eighth at the Penn Relays. She won the WPIAL title and will look to take a state crown in what will be a busy state meet for her.
Hickory's Michaela Burkhauser is the only other returning medalist in the field. She was seventh last season, earning a spot on the podium. Last week, she launched a career best of 135-08 to win the District 10 title, so look for Burkhauser to finish even higher this season.
Coudersport's Adrian Page also PR'd last week, throwing 137-06 to win at District 9. She just missed a medal, finishing ninth last year, but Page will be a big factor this year. Her D9 counterpart Sam Dyson of Punxsutawney should also figure in. Her season best is 136-10.
Kane Area's Trinity Clark, Lakeland's Mikayla Marino, and Moniteau's Cambrie Campbell have all thrown 125 feet or better this season in this solid field of throwers.
