AAA Girls' Discus Preview
Last year, Payden Montana of Berwick experienced some troubles in the circle at the District 2 Championships, and then then-junior, who was sixth at states in the discus the year before, didn't qualify for states in the event (though she did go on to win the AAA state title in the shot put). This year, it seems Montana has been on a mission. Her shot put prowess has been long-documented since indoors, but this spring, she's also posted some big improvements in the disc.
She threw 164-11 (US#8) at Lock Haven this spring, the best throw by a PA girls in a long while. Montana added a throw of 154-08 to win D2 and she'll be aiming to add a discus state title to her resume before the season's done.
In that Lock Haven meet where Montana threw 164, we also throw a big throw from Piper Klinger of Selinsgrove. The senior took second in that meet with a throw of 160-00, a US#12. Klinger has a few other throws over 150 this year and took home the District 4 crown last week. Klinger will be one to watch again this weekend.
Then, of course, there's the reigning state champion in AAA: Madisen Kling of Red Lion. Now a senior, Kling threw 141-03 last spring to win the AAA title. She's been even better this spring, including a best throw of 150-07 to win at Henderson. The District 3 champion will be gunning for the repeat in this stacked field.
Hempfield Area's Mackenna Orie threw a PR of 141-00 to take the WPIAL title. She's been one of the season's biggest improvers, and after not qualifying for states last year, she's a major contender. Butler's Jena Reinheimer took second to Orie at WPIALs. She'll be one to watch after placing fifth at states a year ago.
Dover's Emily Eckard, Cedar Crest's Hannah Woelfling, Corry Area's Abby Whitaker, Lehighton's Isabelle Meckes, and North Pocono's Jessica Slagus are among the other girls to keep an eye on in this field. Slagus returns after taking seventh at states last season.
