Salute To Seniors: Justin Kiefel (Downingtown West)

Today we salute Justin Kiefel of Downingtown West.

Kiefel had a strong career with the Whippets. The Carnegie Mellon recruit specialized in the jumps, leaping to personal bests of 21-04.75 in the long jump and 45-00.5 in the triple jump. That PR in the triple came at the PIAA District 1 Championships, which qualified him for the state meet, where he placed 18th. Indoors, Kiefel jumped 45-00.25, which got him to the indoor state meet, where he placed 11th.

Throughout the end of June and through July we we be honoring our graduating seniors. To submit your own questionnaire to be posted on the front page of PennTrackXC, check out this page and email your responses to Dan Beck (daniel.beck@flosports.tv).

----------------

What was your most memorable race/competition?

The District 1 Championship this year.  Coming into the meet I had been fighting a back injury and was not able to jump very much, so I was excited and surprised when I jumped a state qualifier.

Where did you face your biggest competition?

At TFCA meets there were a lot of excellent jumpers, so the meets were always competitive.

Out of all of your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most?

Being able to organize and run my own 'jumps only' meet at the end of this season.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change about your athletic career in high school?

I would practice long jump and board accuracy a bit more.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Last winter and this spring I had to take time off for a back injury.  The injury taught me the importance of paying attention to how I feel and knowing when to stop training.

What will you miss the most?

Daily practice with my teammates and coaches.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?

Research your event. Try to find books and research papers (not just youtube videos), because the better you understand training the more effectively you'll train.

How have your coaches influenced your performances and your life goals overall?

My jumps coach, Coach Ferron, taught me to always shoot high with my goals and not sell myself short.

What are your post-high school plans?

I'm going to Carnegie Mellon University for Mechanical Engineering and track.

Any shoutouts?

Shoutout to my family for supporting me throughout my track career, and West Jumps for being awesome people to train with every day.
