Jonah Powell of Grove City Area moved to the top of state rankings in the 1,600 meters at Sunday's MileSplit/SPIRE Scholastic Showcase in Geneva, Ohio.
Powell, the Class AA state champion from the cross country season, took third in a loaded field, clocking a US#7 time of 4:15.97, also a PA#1 by over 3 seconds. It's a PR for Powell by over 2 seconds compared to his previous best time, which came in the prelims of 1,600 meters at outdoor states last year (he went on to take third in the finals).
Nick Foster from Michigan won the race in 4:07.16, while Vincent Mauri from Ohio was second in 4:09.42, which are US#1 and US#2 times, respectively.
It's a relatively open field in the mile this year in Pennsylvania, and Sunday's performance proved that Powell will be among the favorites at the indoor state meet.
