Girls' Triple Jump Preview
Christina Warren of Perkiomen Valley comes into Sunday looking to win her fourth career state gold. She's won two titles outdoors in the event and enters this weekend as the reigning indoor state champ. Her season best jump of 40-11 is a current US#4 and she's a consistently great performer, particularly in the triple. She's the favorite once again here.
Her best challenge will come from West York's Tesia Thomas, who popped a huge PR of 40-05 at Susquehanna earlier this season, a jump that stands at US#5, right behind Warren. Thomas, who has an outdoor best of over 39 feet, could pull off the upset with a similarly great performance.
Saint Basil Academy's Tia Taylor, the top seed in the long jump, will be a factor as well. She only competed once in the triple this season and it was an all-conditions PR of 38-11. The sophomore will be worth watching for in the TJ on Sunday.
Five girls come into the event with bests in the 37-foot range this season. Friends' Central's Inara Shell was third at indoor states last year as a freshman. She has an outdoor best over 39 feet and shouldn't be slept on in this field. Central Dauphin's Gabriella Recce, Saint Basil's Sasha Lee, Conwell-Egan's Theresa Richardson, and Upper Darby's Siani Barnes are among the others with season bests at 37 feet or better.
Saint Basil's Jayla Bernard is another returning medalist; she was eighth last year. There are three entries here from Saint Basil and each have a legitimate shot at getting on the medal stand this weekend.
The state meet record stands at 40-11.5 from 2013. That record could certainly be on high alert with the amount of talent in this field.
