Boys' Shot Put Preview
Two boys enter the weekend in the 60+ club. Hickory's Brock Grundy launched a big PR of 60-07 at YSU to put himself in the PA#1 spot heading into the state meet. Fifth a year ago, Grundy will look to convert that into state gold this weekend. The other is Somerset Area's Nick Hyde. The senior threw 60-01 earlier in the season and has been tossing the most consistently long throws of anyone in the state. He threw 59 feet in each of his last two meets. He was seventh at states last year.
But there will be plenty of contenders. Fleetwood Area's Jeff Kline is the top returner was last year's state meet. A junior, Kline sits at PA#3 with a best of 58-00.5. He was third a year ago, and can make a run at the top spot this year.
The year's top breakthrough in the shot has been Connor Vass-Gal of Wilmington. He started off his season with a throw of 58-04.5 and comes into states at PA#3. Look for the up-and-coming sophomore to make some noise at PSU.
Another returning medalists are Germantown Academy's Olatide Abinusawa. He was fifth last season and comes into Sunday at PA#5 with a best of 56-10.5, which he threw at the Carnival a few weeks ago. Other qualifiers from last year that are back this winter to states are Brock Harmon of Chambersburg and Justin Adams of Pottsgrove. Brock Gingrich of Cocalico (PA#6) and Bailey O'Malley of Baldwin (PA#8) will also be in the mix for medals.
