Boys' High Jump Preview
One of the bigger shocks at last year's state meet came in the boys' high jump, as Kolt Byers of Bermudian Springs took home the state title with a big PR of 6-06. Byers is back this season, hoping to replicate that performance and score another state title.
But this will be close.
The top two seeds are Reading's Juan Mato-Segura (above) and Perkiomen Valley's Cole Peterlin, with both having cleared bests of 6-08. Mato-Segura is undefeated this winter and beat Peterlin the lone time the pair squared off at the PTFCA Carnival. Mato-Segura was second at indoor states last year, while Peterlin was 12th. Look for both to be among the favorites.
Byers, meanwhile, has jumped a best of 6-06 this season. He was fourth at the Carnival in what was a bit of a state meet preview. He'll look to pull out another clutch performance for the win.
Kasey Savage of Hatboro-Horsham has also cleared 6-06 this season. The sophomore will be one to watch against a veteran field. Tristan Jones of Plymouth Whitemarsh, who was tenth at indoor states last year, should figure in here, as well. Jones jumped a best of 6-05 (PA#5) this season. Stanley Hamilton of State College is another state meet returner from a year ago.
Butler's Sami Taoufik and Montoursville's Dominic Caputo both enter the weekend at PA#6 with season bests of 6-04 and will aim for high finishes in this open field.
One interesting thing to note is that most of the top high jumpers cleared their top heights early in the season. The athlete that summons that early-season magic on Sunday could be the one to grabs gold.
