AAA Girls' Shot Put Preview
One of the day's most competitive events outside of Seth Grove Stadium this weekend will come in the girls shot put, where a number of girls will be in the hunt for the AAA win.
The top-ranked girl in the event is Hempfield Area's Mackenna Orie. The senior is undefeated this season, throwing over 46 feet three separate times. Her season best of 46-7.5 is PA No. 2 overall and will make her among the favorites for Friday morning. She was sixth a year ago.
Perhaps the one with the most momentum coming into the weekend is Council Rock South's Siniru Iheoma, who enters as the top seed. The sophomore has broke through in a big way this spring, throwing 45-11.75 and 44-1 in consecutive weeks. After not qualifying for states last year, she could take the top prize come Friday.
Berks Catholic's Keeley Suzenski is the top returner from last year. She took second to Payden Montana, who broke the all-time state record in the event to win it. The District 3 champ has a season best of 45-9 and should be in contention.
Penn Hills' Lillia Allen was second to Orie at WPIALs and has a season best of 43-6. The senior will have a good shot at a high finish. Easton Area's Kasey Thomas and Upper Darby's Kayla Thorpe threw season bests at their respective district meets. Thomas won D11 with a throw of 42-9.75, while Thorpe was second at District 1 to Iheoma with a throw of 42-0.25.
This one is going to be close, and may take a throw in the high 40s to capture the state title.
