AA Girls' Discus Preview
Greenwood's Mallory Kauffman will look to win her first career state gold on Friday morning in the AA discus. The senior is yet to lose in the event this season, and better yet, has been awfully consistent. Her season best sits at 160-6 from a dual meet, but Kauffman threw 160-3 to win the District 3 title last week.
She'll have a legitimate shot at Heather Coyler's 1997 state meet record of 162-10, so the state meet could really start with a bang on day one.
South Park's Maura Huwalt, like the shot put, will have the best chance to pull off the win over Kauffman. She is, after all, the defending state champion in the event; Kauffman was third in the disc last season. Huwalt has been throwing well this season, claiming a number of big wins, including the WPIAL title. At Penn Relays, she threw 149-6, a PR, to place fifth in the field. She'll have a good chance at defending her state crown.
Four other girls in the field have thrown over 130 feet this season. Lakeland's Mikayla Marino threw 138-0 to win the District 2 title last week. She was 11th last year, but she's much improved in 2019. Marian Catholic's Emma McClafferty and Hickory's Molly Piso are returning medalists from last year. McClafferty, the District 11 champ, was sixth in 2018 and has a season best and PR this year of 131-3. Piso was eighth last season, and threw a career best of 134-3 last week to win District 10.
Carbondale's Sarah Korty was second to Marino in District 2, and has a season best of 131-5 from that meet.
