AA Girls' Javelin Throw Preview
A good battle should be coming in the AA girls javelin between a number of the state's top javelin throwers, regardless of classification.
The top-ranked AA girl heading into the weekend is Maryann Ackerman of Slippery Rock Area. The sophomore has improved in a big way this spring. She's thrown over 140 feet four times, including most recently to win the District 10 title at 142-04. Her season best of 147-5 puts her atop the AA rankings.
The top seed entering the weekend is the state's most versatile thrower, Maura Huwalt from South Park. The senior Auburn recruit tossed a career best of 144-11 to win the WPIAL title. She was seventh last year and a return trip to the podium is likely, but she'd love to grab state gold in this event.
Someone who knows how to step up at the right time is Skylar Sherry of Johnsonburg. The senior was second each of the last two years at the state meet. She'll look to move up the No. 1 this season. Her best throw this season is 129-1 to win the District 9 title and she'll look for another big effort at Ship.
Hughesville's Alex Snyder threw a big PR of 129-9 to win the District 4 title. She'll be a factor this week after that big launch. Greenville's Madison Hawthorne was sixth at states last year. She was second to Ackerman in D10 and will once again look for a return trip to the medal stand. Delone Catholic's Maddie Sieg is unbeaten this season. The District 3 champ has a season best of 126-9, and should make a run at a high finish here.
