Thelma Davies further solidified herself in Pennsylvania track and field history at the PIAA State Championships. The Girard College sprinter won her fourth straight Class AA state title in both the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash.
While a number of athletes in state history, particularly in recent years, have won four straight PIAA state titles, Davies has become the first to accomplish this in two different events.
Davies emerged onto the scene as a freshman, winning both the 100 meter and 200 meter state titles in dominant fashion. During that first state meet, Davies also broke the 100 meter dash meet record and tied the 200 meter dash record, both held by Olympian and 2001 Rochester graduate Lauryn Williams.
From there, Davies repeated in the 100 and 200 as a sophomore and then again as a junior. On Saturday, she ran to both titles for a fourth time. In the 200, she went 23.74 to take sole possession of that 200 meter record she formerly shared with Williams.
"I'm just happy it's mine, it's all mine," the senior and LSU recruit said with a smile.
After it was all said and done the spent Davies reflected on her PIAA accomplishments.
"it's just having that focus, and trusting your coach and trusting your workouts," she added. "It's just making your team, your family, and everybody else proud."
The all-time Pennsylvania record books have already belonged to Davies in the sprints. Now so does the PIAA program.
It will likely stay that way for a very long time.
