A number of former Pennsylvania standouts on the high school scene competed well at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas this week. Friday brought men's track finals and a few field finals, in addition to some field finals from Wednesday.
Here's how some of PA's top former high schoolers performed in Austin on the men's side:
The University of Arizona's Jordan Geist (Knoch '17) put together yet another All American performance in the shot put. The sophomore thrower took third place in the shot put with a toss of 66-7.5. That improves on his fifth place finish in the event from a year ago.
Dashaun Jackson (Harrisburg '15) of Saint Francis University showed some huge improvement this spring, culminating with a big race in the 110 meter hurdles final and All American status. The senior went 13.37 in the prelims and then 13.38 to take fourth place in a field that saw Grant Holloway break the collegiate record with a 12.98.
In the javelin throw, there were a number of PA alums in the field. Leading the way was Ethan Dabbs of the University of Virginia (Richland '18). The 2018 AA state champ in the event threw 236-11.75 to take seventh in the field and earn All-American honors.
Penn State's Morgan Shigo (Fleetwood Area '14) was seventh in the hammer throw with a throw of 232-1.5 to close out what has been a terrific career for the fifth-year senior. That earned him All American honors in the event for the second straight season.
In the 1,500 meters, Villanova's Casey Comber (Hatboro-Horsham '15) took eighth place in a wild kick finish. Comber went 3:42.77 to follow up an All American performance in the mile from indoors with another All American run on Friday.
The University of Kansas's Treyvon Ferguson (Milton Hershey '18) posted a huge two foot personal best in the triple jump. Ferguson jumped 53-01 to take tenth in a deep competition in Austin. Just a freshman, Ferguson has solidified himself as one to watch in the event.
Ayden Owens (North Allegheny '18) of University of Southern California unfortunately no-heighted in the high jump, which cost him a shot at a high finish in his first NCAA Outdoor Championship meet in the decathlon. The freshman was in good position after three events, but registering zero points in the high jump set him back. Ultimately, he was a DNF.
In the 400 meter hurdles, Virginia Tech freshman Miles Green placed 16th in the prelims, running 50.80. The ACC champ was the No. 3 freshman in the field.
