The two time defending AAA girls state champions, and PA#4 Emmaus started their title defense, but not without some stiff competition from Downingtown East. Central Bucks East Invitational
Central Bucks East
Two time defending state champions and PA#7 North Penn had an easy go of it on the soggy campus of Central Bucks East, scoring 45 points to defeat the host school by 17. The North Penn duo of state contender Brad Miles and Sam Burnitt, along with Father Judge's Tom Kehl were bunched together for 2+miles of the race, but the Miles and Burnitt pulled away in the last 1000 meters for the 1-2 victory, Miles in 16:19 and Burnitt in 16:23. Nick Scarpalo of C.B. West finished 3rd, while Kehl finished 4th.
On the other hand, preseason PA#1 North Penn girls had to grind out a tough victory on the road against the host school. Despite a 1-2 finish from C.B. East, North Penn came away with the win 49-56. However, the close team finish was overshadowed by the strong performance of C.B. East junior Katie Kinkead, who took the lead at 3/4 of a mile and never looked back, winning with a time of 19:21, 36 seconds ahead of teammate Jenny Guidera in 19:57.
