Flashback Friday: A Delco Duel At The UD Relays

What do we love about track and field? The passion and the excitement.

It's exactly what we miss the most right now. As the coronavirus (COVID-19) has halting much of our daily life, we are reminded that the outdoor track and field season in Pennsylvania was slated to start this Saturday with an opening weekend of meets.

Among those meets was the Upper Darby Relays.

And that excitement was no more on display than at last year's UD Relays on a brisk day in Drexel Hill. The track heated up for the fastest section of the girls' 4x200-meter relay, which saw traditional Delaware County foes Penn Wood and Upper Darby race to the line.

As UD and PW raced to the line, the whole crowd got into it, with athletes lining the homestretch to cheer the runners home. Penn Wood ultimately won that battle, edging out the hosts Upper Darby by .02 at the finish.

It exemplified what we love about the sport. Even Olympian and former Penn Wood star Leroy Burrell, currently a coach at the University of Houston, weighed in:

We won't see the start of the outdoor track and field season tomorrow, and it's up in the air when it will be back. But in the meantime, let's take some time to remember why we love this sport. Watch the full video of that girls' 4x200 above and check out a clip in the Twitter embed above.
