Margaret Carroll came away with a third place finish and one of the fastest 5Ks in Pennsylvania state history at adidas Indoor Nationals on Friday night in Virginia Beach.
The Northeastern senior ran a time of 17:11.73. That's the third fastest time in ever run by a PA high schooler indoors. Only Tessa Barrett (16:11.85 in 2014) and Tori Gerlach (17:00.54 in 2012) have run faster.
Carroll stayed with a led pack for much of the race before eventual race winner Caroline Lehman of Florida broke away in the final mile. Lehman won in 16:53.22. Carroll then battled it out the rest of the way with second place finisher Clara James-Heer, who beat her by two seconds for silver.
Carroll, a Villanova recruit, is coming off an impressive fall season. The District 3 Class AAA XC champions went on to take third at the state meet in the classification. After that, she won her race at the XC Town USA Meet of Champions in Indiana before coming back to run a very fast 16:50.56 outdoors on the track for 5,000 meters.
