AAA Boys Long Jump Preview
Jaden Price-Whitehead of Upper Dublin missed out on an opportunity to take home some gold medals at the outdoor state meet last year. The pandemic took away that chance for Price-Whitehead, who leapt 25 feet even during the indoor season. Now a senior, the South Carolina signee will look to finally get an outdoor state title.
He's been on fire the past few weeks, leaping a PA No. 1 24-0.5 at SOLs, and he followed that up with a 23-8.5 to win the District 1 title. He's been putting down some good marks and will be the one to beat in the long jump.
But it is a crazy-deep year in the long jump in PA. Five boys in total have jumped 23 feet or better and a few more are right on the cusp on the 23-foot mark.
Danville's Brandon Zimmerman sits at PA No. 2 with his season best of 23-3.75. He was beat by Williamsport's Allen Taylor for the District 4 title. Taylor jumped 22-11.25 and is the sixth-ranked AAA long jumper. Both have a shot at going after the win. Tommy Christie of LaSalle College soared to a big PR of 23-2 to take the District 12 title last week -- a statement that the senior is ready to go after his first state title.
Hatboro Horsham's Kasey Savage jumped a PR of 23-1 to place second at the District 1 meet, behind Price-Whitehead. He's been putting down some big marks at the right time and could have another big leap coming at states. North Penn's Aaron Malamed is also apart of that 23-foot club. He jumped 23-0 at the Helman Invite and was third in District 1 against that great competition.
District 11 champion Jordan Wicker of Nazareth Area and District 12 runner-up Brendan Leneghan of St. Joseph's Prep put down big marks last week. Wicker jumped 22-11 and Leneghan jumped 22-10 to take second to Christie. District 3 champion Kyle Murr of Penn Manor leapt to a PR of 22-4 to take the District 3 title last week and could make some more noise back at Ship.
Expect to see even more big jumps at the state meet. This could turn into the type of competition where everyone is one-upping each other. Expect it to be close!
