Individuals Breakdown
Just four of the top 11 boys from the D6-AA championship race last year are back this fall, so there will be plenty of new faces near the front this season. Those four are also the returning state qualifiers from last year from D6-AA.
Eli Wandel of Central Cambria is the top returner based on district finish. He was third, sandwiched between his CC teammates, who swept the first five spots. Wandel was 74th at the state meet. The lone returning state medalist is Devon Morgan of Central Cambria. After an off day at the district meet (he was 11th), Morgan placed 17th at the state meet to earn a medal. Morgan will look to build off that strong finish last year and compete for a top ten spot.
Also from CC and back this year is Aiden Lechleitner, who was seventh in the district and 48th at the state meet. Each of these boys have a shot at taking the district title and state medals this season.
Looking to challenge that CC trio is Bellefonte's Chase Ebeling. He was eighth at the district meet last year and 51st at the state meet. Overall, it should be a pretty interesting battle up front. It was a strong senior class last year and it will give way for the opportunity for many younger runners to make a name for themselves.
Team Breakdown
2020 was a huge year for the Central Cambria boys. After sweeping D6-AA and scoring the minimum 15 points at the district meet, the Red Devils placed second in the state, behind only Lewisburg, which claimed its second straight title. Some talented seniors from last year's Central Cambria squad are gone, but there is a good core in place that should make this team a factor again in 2021.
Morgan, Wandel, and Lechleitner are back this season -- a very strong top three. CC will look to develop some JV runners from last season into strong scoring members this year. This is a strong program and a team that can still make a run at the district title. After all, this team has won six straight district crowns.
Bellefonte Area brings back five of its top seven from last season, and has a good squad in place that will look to challenge Central Cambria. Penn Cambria loses its top two from last season, but has five varsity boys back from 2020. If these teams can get some depth going, they could make it interesting this fall.
