Boys 400m Preview
Guinness Brown of Butler had a terrific 2021 indoor season that saw him emerge as one of the state and nation's premiere sprinter. Of course, with the coronavirus pandemic wiping away a "normal" season, there was no indoor state meet. Brown capped off last winter with a 48.22 to take third at adidas Indoor Nationals.
Brown's been strong again this season. He ran his 400m best of 49.06 at Youngstown State's 300m track. On the banked track at Penn State, he'll chase a PR and more importantly, the first state title of his career.
He will be challenged, though, in what is a talented and frankly wide open boys 400 meter field. Manheim Township's Darren Cammauf will be one to watch as he enjoyed a big senior season. Cammauf went 49.60 to win the Carnival on a flat track -- a sign that he could see a significant time drop at PSU. He was ninth at outdoor states last spring, just missing the podium, so expect a motivated Cammauf to be right in the mix for the title.
North Pocono's Colin Kravitz is another factor in this race. In his first indoor season, he junior has made a nice splash. He went 49.65 at the Armory last week and should contend for a high finish, too. North Penn's Devin Nugent has been hitting his stride at the right time. He went 49.90 to win the TFCAofGP Meet of Champs on a flat track and then anchored the Knights 4x4 to the win with a 48.4 F.A.T. split. Nugent is one to keep an eye on.
Abington's Tyler Abraham was second to Cammauf at the Carnival in an impressive 50.14. He'll be shooting for a sub-50 time and should be a factor for the top five. Epsicopal Academy's Bryce Cooper, State College's Ryan Lindenberg, and Cumberland Valley's Luke Noss are among the others in this field that will challenge for the top five in a field that is talented, but without much separation.
