POWER RANKINGS: Boys Teams Edition #7

North Allegheny Head Coach John Neff discusses WPIAL Sweep

States week is here. This week certainly shook some things up as teams round into championship form. There were surprises across the state, including an unexpected win from the Greencastle Antrim contingent. We're excited to see how things play our in Hershey this week.

Because Cross Country is so unpredictable and there are so many variables at play, these power rankings are somewhat speculative. They are derived from a combination of performances, analytics, and opinions.

Boys Top 10 Teams - POWER RANKINGS Edition #7

RANK(PREV)TEAMRATIONALE
1 (1)

North Allegheny retains the top spot after dominating the WPIAL Championships this weekend. They enter this weekend, riding a two year State Championship streak. They'll look to add to that. They've seen strong competition all season and haven't faltered. This weekend will be the biggest test of the year for them.

2 (2)

Episcopal made their case again this week. They had another historic run at the Belmont Plateau to win the PAISAA (Independent School) State Championship. They're knocking on North Allegheny's door for the number one spot. They had one of the best team averages of All-Time, at the Plateau, comparable to the marks that Cardinal O'Hara set in their 2012 run. O'Hara finished fifth at Team Nationals that year. Still, North Allegheny has been all but perfect this year, and have run different courses than Episcopal (obivously), which makes head-to-head comparison difficult.

3 (3)

LaSalle did what they needed to do at the District 12 Championships. They went in and came out with a win. With five runners in the Top-6, they cruised to the District Championship. Now they'll see North Allegheny for the first time this season, we can't wait.

4 (4)

Grove City has been stellar all year. They have put together one of the best seasons we have seen in 2A in a while. Yet, the road to the State Title won't be a cake-walk. They'll have challengers from Lewisburg, Danville and Lampeter Strasburg on their heels. A full preview of that championship race is coming soon.

5 (6)

Yet again, North Penn impressed. They have been climbing these rankings steadily throughout the season. This team is excited and confident. While cooling down after the District 1 Championship, they learned that they had won and let out a roar of excitement that brought goosebumps to anyone familiar with that feeling. A team that is having fun, is a dangerous team. North Penn is dangerous.

Just wow. Greencastle Antrim shocked us all by winning the District 3 Championship. Only the boys on the team itself, could've predicted the finish. They out maneuvered Hempfield and Manheim Township with a strong pack that finished within a 31-second compression. In truth they played the numbers game, and if they can replicate that performance next week, it could pay dividends.

7 (7)

A week after winning the Lancaster Lebanon League Championships, Hempfield finished second at the District 3 Championships. This squad is coming alive at the right time, and if they can replicate the performance they had the Lancaster Lebanon League Final, they can be in the running for a Top-3 finish this year.

8 (5)

The Manheim Township boys appear to be in a small slump, but this is still the squad that won Paul Short a month ago. They were second at the Lancaster Lebanon League Championships and then third at the District 3 Championship (3A). They'll be in the mix again this weekend, and we expect them to break out of their slump.

9 (NR)

Penncrest

We have a weird relationship with Penncrest. Every time we take them out of our Power Rankings, they prove us wrong. They were second to a strong North Penn team at the District 1 Championships this weekend and will be in the mix for a top five at States this week.

10 (NR)

Parkland

It has been an up and down season for the Parkland boys, but it appears they're back on track. Riding two big wins, one at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Championship, and another at the District 11 Championship, the Parkland boys are red hot, and return to the Pennsylvania Top 10. They'll be hunting for a strong finish to their season this weekend.
