The TSTCA Indoor Championship Meet is scheduled for tomorrow, February 18th, at Edinboro University.
The Girls' Side of Things:
The 4x800m will mark the start of the action; naturally, many teams are competing for the win. Canon-McMillan, Winchester Thurston, Norwin, Mount Lebanon, and Fox Chapel Area all have a shot at the title. Canon McMillan enters with the best seed time, 10:09.32.
Dani Prunzik (Upper Saint Clair) is currently the state's fifth-ranked girl in the 60m. Undefeated on the season, she should claim another victory at the TSCTA Championship.
On a similar route to victory will be Canon-McMillan's Rose Kuchera. Kuchera ranks as the PA No. 4 in the 60-Hurdles and enters with a seed time nearly three-tenths of a second faster than the next girl.
The mile race won't disappoint. Last week, Natalie McLean set the PA No. 1 in the 3000m; she is likely targeting a PA Top-3 time in the mile. Seeded at 4:59, she and Jenna Lang (Bethel Park) will traverse the indoor oval together en-route to strong times. Lang is seeded at 5:01.
Abbie Huey is the favorite in the girls' 200m and 400m. She is ranked ninth in the state in the 200m and sixth in the state in the 400m. She has a considerable margin on the field in both events. Her seed time in the 200m of 25.77 is four-tenths faster than the two-seed Olivia Renk (South Fayette). Renk, a standout by-her-own right, is seeded over a second faster than the next girl. So it will be a two-horse race in the 200m.
The 800m run will be decided by Jenna Lang (Bethel Park), Cydney Blahovec (Hempfield (7)), or Lily Colombo (South Fayette). Lang has a slight advantage with her PA No. 13 2:16.50.
The North Allegheny quartet of Wren Kucler, Robin Kucler, Erin McGoey, and Grace Fowley own the top four seeds in the girls' 3000m. While Wren Kucler is likely the favorite with her 10:02 seed time, we wouldn't be surprised to see them work together ahead of next week's PTFCA Championship.
The 4x200m relay, Distance Medley Relay, and 4x400m relay will conclude the on-track action. If we had to predict winners, we would go with Canon-McMilan in the 4x200m, North Allegheny in the DMR, and Bethel Park in the 4x400m. There are no heavy favorites in any of those races, so expect thrillers in all three.
In the field, Justley Sharp should dominate the Shot-Put competition. The second-ranked Pennsylvania shot-putter has thrown 45 feet this year and stands over eight feet further than the next contender.
The girls' long jump will come down to the best of Megan Grimm (Central Valley), Grace Howard (South Fayette), and Rose Kuchera. They have all cleared 17 feet this season and are seeded within three inches of one another.
Butler's Megan Baggeta and Hempfield's (7) Lauren Howard will duel in the triple jump. They are ranked fourth and fifth in the state, respectively.
The high jump competition is a toss-up. There are eight girls within three inches of each other, and anyone can truly come away with the win. Grace Howard enters as the top seed, with her state leading 5-5.
Grace Iwig (Hempfield) should walk away with the Girls Pole Vault title, though she will have competition from Lindsay Breneman (North Allegheny)
The Boys' Side of Things:
With the Boys 4x800m set to kick things off, three strong teams jump to the forefront for the relay title. Butler, South Fayette, and Bradford Area enter with similar seed times. They've each gone sub-8:20 this year. Butler is currently ranked PA No. 8, while South Fayette and Bradford reside in the No. 11 and 19 spots, respectively.
The boys' 60m will feature PA No. 4 Austin Winkleblech (Canon-McMillan) and Mount Lebanon's Connor Rychcik. Winkleblech has run as fast as 6.98, and he is undefeated in February. Both boys will also be amongst the favorites in the 200m dash. Jacob Thompson (Mars) will also contend for the win in that race.
Antonio Votour (Our Lady of Sacred Heart) is expected to put on a show in the 60-Hurdles. He has run four-tenths faster than anyone else in this field, and as the PA No. 2, he is the heavy favorite. His 8.21 is only one hundredth off of the PA No. 1 mark.
Drew Griffith (Butler) is slated to run the one mile. His 4:07 seed time is 20 seconds faster than the next competitor, so we can expect him to use this race as a tune-up before the PTFCA Indoor Championship next week. A number of runners can compete for second, including Rowan Gwin (Fox Chapel), Christian Mattern (McDowell), Patrick Burgos (Elizabeth Forward), and Connor Pivirotto (Plum)
In the boys' 400, Landon Lacey (Butler) owns the one seed with his 49.97. The junior is the current PA No. 10, but he may receive pressure from Caleb Prola of Hempfield (7). Prola has gone 50.36 this season.
Jacob Puhalla (Moon Area) is the defending state champion in the 800m. Though he only raced the event once so far this indoor season, he is still the heavy favorite to win the TSTCA Championship. He ran 1:57.08 at the SPIRE Scholastic Showcase. There are a number of boys right around the 1:59 and 2-minute mark, including Evan Groce (Punxsutawney), Aidan Herman (Deer Lakes), and Ben McLean (Pine-Richland).
In the 3000m, Jack Bertram (North Allegheny) and Michael Braun (Freeport) may go toe-to-toe, but we expect Bertram to come out on top. Bertram ran 8:37 this season and is coming off a cross-country season that saw him finish third at the state meets. Sawyer Weinmann (Upper Saint Clair), Eli Dewitt (Seneca Valley), and Gregory Kossuth (North Allegheny) are all dark horse picks.
The 4x200m relay, Distance Medley Relay, and 4x400m relay will conclude the on-track action. Canon-McMillan, South Fayette, and Butler are the favorites in each of those races, respectively.
In the field - Peyton Murray is the heavy favorite in the Boy's Shot Put. He threw 54-2 last night at the Hempfield Spartans Competition. His teammate JP Gera or the Shenango contingent of Andrew Demok and Michael Othites could challenge him.
The high jump could go to several boys. In this field, five boys have jumped over 6 feet. Owen Curran (North Allegheny) enters as the No. 1 seed with his 6-3.
Andrew Layton (Waynesburg Central) is the favorite in the Boys' Pole Vault. He is currently the top-ranked boy in Pennsylvania and ranks 39th in the nation with his vault of 15-6. Brandon Schneider (Erie) is on his heels. He has cleared 15-1 and is the second-ranked PA boy.
The long and triple jump could both go several ways. There are an incredible amount of boys within inches of each other in both events.
