Jordan Sowell broke a 14-year-old Pennsylvania triple jump record on Sunday as the Cheltenham High School senior recorded a lifetime best mark of 51 feet, 1 inch.

At the Kristian Marche Memorial Invitational, Sowell used his last attempt to his claim record and shatter Carlton Lavong's 2010 state mark of 50-6.75.

In mid-December, Sowell jumped 49-9.25 to hit the PA No. 2 all-time mark. That thrust him into the national spotlight.

His newest mark moves him to the top of the national rankings.

Sowell finished fifth at the PTFCA Indoor State Championship last year and then finished seventh at the PIAA Class 3A State Championships on the outdoor runway.

He has enjoyed a transformation season and may now find himself contending for a state and national title.

Carlton Lavong set the previous state record at Nike Indoor Nationals, where he finished second. He went on to win an NCAA DII National Title while competing for Adams State.
