That's Monsignor to you... Bonner didn't wait as long as the Boston Red Sox for their championship, but it wasn't an overnight thing, either. Forty years have passed since the Drexel Hill team had bragging rights in the Philadelphia Catholic League. Thanks to an across-the-board effort, and some key winning points in the 110 and 400 Hurdles, along with the Long Jump, the Friars are on top of the PCL. They beat perennial power Cardinal O'Hara by ten, 90-80. Malik Sams took first in the 110 Hurdles at 14.83, while Bryant Mills came from behind, and in a charge fueled by the importance of the meet, won the 400 Hurdles in 55.90. Mike Tomasco took the Long Jump with a leap of 21-05.25, and was 3rd in the Triple Jump at 41-10.50... and the 400, going 50.06. O'Hara's Jim Smith beat St. Joseph Prep's Juan Cave on misses, both clearing 6-08. Greg Thomas, O'Hara, went 4:22.12 for the Mile (yes, the Mile), and 9:36.40 for 3200m. And Cardinal Egan's Jeff McClenton won the 100 in 11.00 and the 200 in 22.31.
The girls' team chase was no less exciting, as O'Hara used remarkable team depth and a very talented freshman class to tally 155 points, 19 better than West Catholic. O'Hara took the three relays in 49.17, 3:57.96 and 9:29.86. Frosh Beth Kelly went 11:24.05 to win the 3200 and was 2nd in the Mile in 5:11.60. O'Hara had 21 points in the 3200, going 1-2-5-6. Latavia Thomas, West Catholic, won the Mile in 5:10.10, and the 800 in 2:18.29. O'Hara's Michele Frayne contributed 26 points in four events. And in her final League championship meet, Nicole Leach not only won four individual events, she set the league record in each, notching 12.05 for 100m, 24.37 for 200m, 54.13 for 400m, and 59.85 for the 400 Hurdles.
