There were three US#1 performances on the boys side. Abington was the big highlight all over the country with their big victories in front of the colleges at the New Balance Collegiate Invite. Abington won the 4x400 Friday Night (3:16.78) and the 4x800 Saturday night (7:45.93) to break the PA all time state record in both events and set new US#1 performances. Abington continues to lead the state in three of the four relays and are also US#4 in the distance medley relay.
Around this time of the winter season, the distance runners start to find themselves and make their push towards the state championship. For the past 3 weeks, the distance runners have put out some strong performances all over the state. The other US#1 came from AAA state cross country champion Ryan Gil, who ran 8:36.60 to win the 3000 meter run at the latest TSTCA meet at Edinboro. After a slow start in the 3000 state wide, there have been seven performances under the state standard in the past 3 weekends. The mile has had an even stronger surge at the top, with 10 of the top 11 performances coming in the past 3 weeks. Dustin Wilson of Chestnut Hill Academy has led that list for that time period but has some of PA's best right on his heels. Wade Endress improved his state leading 800 meter mark and has managed to stay in the national top 10 with his US#8 time of 1:55.56 on Friday. Kyle Moran of Abington just ran a US#10 mark Monday night at the Varsity Classic (1:56.0h) after splitting 1:52.8 on the record setting 4x8 on Saturday. 13 800 meter runners have cracked two minutes this season and with that kind of depth, it may take a sub 1:56 time on February 26 to make the podium. Central Bucks West (8:01.86), Penncrest (8:03.0h), and Wissahickon (8:08.70) moved up to PA#2-3-5 in the 4x800 meter relay. West Chester Henderson moved up to PA#2 in the distance medley relay Monday Night with their time of 10:33.6h.
In the sprints, Deandre Black of Schenley moved to PA#3 in the 200 meter dash with his time of 22.64 from Friday's TSTCA meet. Nine of the top ten times in PA have been run on banked or oversized tracks, which should make the state 200 finals an event not to miss. Dakoda Walker of McDowell put himself in the top five in the 60 meter dash with a 7.02 clocking at TSTCA, the fastest 60 meter time in PA since January 22. Kevin Day of Glen Mills took over PA#1 in the 55 meter hurdles with his 7.65 performance Thursday night at his home invitational, surpassing Chris Williams of Strath Haven. Williams is still PA#1 in the 60 hurdles. McDowell cracked the top eight in the 4x200 meter relay on Friday night with their 1:31.98 performance. Look for these events to pick up in these final three weeks.
In field event action, Darrell Hill of Penn Wood had set his state leading mark in the shot put on opening day when he threw 58-5. After spending most of the past few weeks in the mid 50s, he broke out a big throw Thursday night at Glen Mills with his US#8 mark of 59-1. Mike Recla of Bloomsburg just threw 57-11 (US#11) on Sunday at Susquehanna to move to PA#2. The top of the list is getting crowded behind them, with two more guys at 56 feet or higher. Trinity's Mike McClelland has a US#11 mark in his name in the high jump with his 6-8 clearance from January 29.
