The first weekend of the indoor track postseason put some contenders in the spotlight in their quest to earn state championships. Although some events had little or no change in the top 8, the challengers for the state championships are making their big push up the leaderboard.Just like it was on the girls side, Long Jump was the highlight of the weekend. Rich D'Ambrosio of Malvern Prep competed in the long jump for the first time since December 11. Without any run throughs or pop ups into the pit to speak of in that time, D'Ambrosio came out and became the new state leader with his US#7 mark of 23-6.50 to win at the Carnival. D'Ambrosio is only one of two long jumpers to clear 23 feet this season. In other field events, Beau Whitman of Germantown Academy became the second vaulter this season to clear 15 feet. Kyle Long of Hempfield became PA#3 in the shot put with his 2nd place performance at the carnival with a mark of 57-5.25. Darrell Hill of Penn Wood continues to hold the state lead he gained on opening weekend.
In the sprints, Wellington Zaza of Upper Darby won the carnival in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.30, which was PA#4. 24 hours later, Marcus Collins of Monsignor Bonner broke the meet record twice, including the record he set in the preliminary round to win the Catholic Leage title with a time of 8.26, crushing the old record 8.55. Those two performances are both in the state top five. In the 200, Yini Donnie ran a PA#3 time of 22.51 to win at the carnival and it's the 2nd fastest time on a flat track this year. Christian Lupica of Holy Ghost Prep ran 22.87 for PA#7 to finish behind Donnie. Matt Gilmore of Cheltenham still tops the list with a flat track time from late December. Bobby Herbster of Garnet Valley cracked the top 8 in the 60 meter dash with his time of 7.08 to finish 4th.
For the distance events, we had two PA#2s come from the Carnival. Hong Cho of Wissahickon ran 1:56.22 to win the 800 meter run, holding off Drew Magaha of Upper Moreland, who went from last place at 400 meters to 2nd place in the race. Magaha is now PA#4. Nate McClafferty of Conrad Weiser put on a big move in the final lap and change of the mile to beat Ed Schrom of Central Dauphin. McClafferty ran 4:20.82 to win the race, but Dustin Wilson of Chestnut Hill Academy is still the only PA miler this season to crack 4:20. Lately, the 3000 meter run has been heating up, and the Carnival added two performances to the list this week. Dillon Farrell of Wissahickon was in great control of the race ahead of Zach Greth of Exeter. Greth made up some ground near the end but Farrell held on for the win. Farrell ran a PA#5 8:55.85 while Greth ran a PA#6 8:57.89. Finally, Central Bucks West was the only team to have a relay crack the top 8 this week. Their 4x400 meter relay finished 2nd behind all time state leaders Abington with a PA#6 time of 3:27.69, the only time in the top 8 run on a flat track.
