The Boys PennTrackXC Great Eight 2/21/11

The regular season is over and the top athletes on the boys side in PA are all hitting their stride at the right time. With most of the big performances occurring over the past two weeks, all the contenders have come forward and have made their case to become the next state indoor champion. In this edition of the Great 8, we will look at who ran, threw, and jumped their way into contention.

The long jump was the hot event of the weekend, with Rich D'Ambrosio of Malvern and Richard Rouse of Penn Hills making the national top five! D'Ambrosio added three inches to his season best jump with his TFCAofGP Meet of Champions win and US#4 of 23-9.75, while Rouse won the Tri State Meet of Champions with a US#5 mark of 23-9. The two 2nd place performers from both meets are PA#3 and PA#4 respectively. Kevin Day of Glen Mills was 2nd to D'Ambrosion with a mark of 23-2.50 and Mike McClelland of Trinity was 2nd to Rouse with a mark of 23-00.75. Rouse added to his record day with a US#5 triple jump winning mark of 48-1.50. TFCAofGP MOC winner Trevell Moxey of North Penn and Tri State MOC runner up Shawn Johnson of Canon-McMillan tied for PA#6 with marks of 45-4 and Wellington Zaza of Upper Darby was 2nd to Moxey with a PA#8 mark of 45-2.50. In the shot put, the top two from each meet made moves on the Great 8 list. Darrell Hill of Penn Wood became the first PA thrower this season to crack 60 feet with his winning mark of 60-00.75 @ Lehigh, while Luke Monta of Greensburg Salem won at Edinboro with a PA#2 mark of 58-9.50. Scott Rushton of Episcopal Academy was the runner up to Hill with a PA#5 mark of 57-2, while David Reinhard of Bradford was runner up to Monta with a PA#6 mark of 56-4.50. Finally, John Dahlstrand of McDowell finished 2nd at the tri state championship with a T-PA#3 mark of 6-5.

In the sprint events, the 60 meter hurdles heated up in a big way this week. PA#2-6 all came from the TFCAofGP Meet of Champions, with Eric Futch of Penn Wood and Wellington Zaza of Upper Darby running T-PA#2 times of 8.14. The top five performers from that meet will be top challengers to state leader Chris Williams of Strath Haven. Greg Garmon of McDowell won the Tri State 200 meter dash and moved up to PA#2 with a time of 22.38, while Yini Donnie of Northeast High ran a PA#3 22.49 to win the TFCAofGP Meet of Champs. Dan Ernst of Central Bucks West (PA#7 22.84) and Jeremy Irving of Garnet Valley (PA#8 22.86) were finishers behind Donnie. Shakeil Carter of Bethel Park also ran a PA#8 22.86, finishing 2nd at Tri States. Scott Catalano of Lansdale Catholic competed in his 2nd meet since injuring his hamstring on December 30 and ran a PA#6 7.03 to win the TFCAofGP MOC, his 2nd best performance all time. Tyler Ross of Monsignor Bonner was 2nd behind Catalano with a T-PA#8 time of 7.08. In the 400, Chidi Okezie of New Media Tech ran a PA#8 time of 50.25 to 400 meter dash at Lehigh over state leader and previously undefeated Matt Gilmore of Cheltenham.

In perhaps the deepest distance event of the 2011 season, Brandon Krszal of West Allegheny won the Tri States 800 meter run with a PA#4 time of 1:56.43, while defending indoor champion Luke Lefebure of West Chester Henderson won the TFCAofGP MOC with a PA#7 time of 1:57.02. The Great 8 is all under 1:58 this season. Both Meet of Champs winners in the 3000 cracked the Great 8, with Dustin Wilson winning in Eastern PA with a PA#4 time of 8:52.74 and Paul DeGregorio of Baldwin won the Western PA edition with a PA#6 time of 8:57.73. Logan Steiner of North Allegheny was 2nd to DeGregorio with a PA#8 time of 8:58.15. Chris Campbell of Council Rock North won the mile at Lehigh with a PA#5 time of 4:21.43.

Just like on the girls side, the distance medley relay had the most change this week, led by Wissahickon winning at TFCAofGP with a PA#3 time of 10:35.56. Pittsburgh Central Catholic (PA#6 10:41.94) and North Allegheny (PA#7 10:43.15) went 1-2 at the Tri State Meet of Champs. In the 4x800 meter relay, Lasalle beat out Wissahickon to win at Lehigh. Lasalle's 8:04.21 is PA#4 while Wissahickon's 8:05.16 is PA#5. McDowell ran a PA#3 time of 1:31.13 to win the 4x200 meter relay at Tri States, becoming the 2nd team from Western PA to crack the top 8, while Cardinal O'Hara ran a PA#4 time of 3:25.23 to win the TFCAofGP Meet of Champs 4x400 meter relay, meaning all of the top 8 4x400s are all from Eastern PA.
