Welcome to May! The month of April ended with a bang as many teams gathered in West Philadelphia at Franklin Field and represented the state well at the Penn Relays. The girls had to deal with some wacky weather, as an early cloudy morning turned into some thunderstorms and two hours worth of weather delays. But based on the performances, the rain didn't stop PA from representing their state well.
 

The 4x800 meter relay kicked things off and Strath Haven returned to the big stage for the first time since setting the indoor all time state record back in March. After a 9:09 preliminary performance, Strath Haven would finish 4th in the finals with a US#3 time of 9:05.34. West Chester Henderson (9:16.79 US#7), Central Bucks West (9:20.16), Notre Dame (9:21.54) and Downingtown East (9:26.13) also cracked the top five in the state and four of the five are in the US top 20!
 

As was mentioned last week, before anyone attended Penn Relays, they should have memorized the top eight because it may not be the same after the meet. The 4x100 has a brand new top SEVEN! The top five, led by Abington's 48.14, are separated by an extremely narrow .39 seconds! Out of the top seven, only Central Dauphin East (PA#2 48.31) and Brookville Area (PA#7 49.19) are not from District 1.
 

The 4x400 meter relay has even bigger changes compared to last week. The top two are the same top two from indoors. Abington won the Philadelphia Area 4x400 with a US#10 time of 3:47.16. Central Bucks West is PA#2 leading the chase pack with a time of 3:54.89. The chase pack between 3 and 12 are all under 4:02 and only ONE team is not from district one and that's PA#3 West Catholic (3:55.74). District one relay teams will have a huge advantage at states in this event. That is, if they can get out of their own district.
 

But we also had plenty of invitational action around the state as teams are looking to find their best form before next week's start of the three week postseason. With many sprint relays being put on display, the open sprints didn't have a ton of changes. The 100 meter dash added two performances, led by a PA#6 time from Brookville Area's Lanae Newsome (12.22). Alicia Evans of Quakertown made it to PA#7 in the 200 meter dash with her victory at the Hatboro Horsham Lady Hatter Invitational (25.31). Meanwhile, the 400 meter dash added two more sub 57 second performances. Morgan Sheaffer of West Perry ran a PA#2 time of 56.68 to win the Stan Morgan Invite while Lydia Ali of Radnor won the Springfield Invitational with a PA#4 time of 56.86.
 

The distance events had a little bit more activity than the sprints. The 800 meter run added three more girls in the 2:16 club, with North Penn's Heather Selheimer running a PA#3 time of 2:16.0h to win the ASD Invitational. Taylor Carcella (2:16.23 PA#4) and Sheaffer (PA#6 2:16.42) cracked the top eight this week. The 1600 adds a US#3 1600 meter run from now TWO TIME Penn Relays Mile Champion Angel Piccirrillo of Homer Center. Her converted 1600 meter time of 4:47.16 is a major PR for the junior. Maria Seykora of Notre Dame also ran a huge personal best at Penn with her converted 1600 meter time of 4:52.19, five seconds better than her best. Away from Penn, Lauren Mills of Unionville came .33 away from breaking the five minute mark on her home track (PA#3) and the Liberty duo of Amy Darlington (PA#4) and Jess Cygan (PA#7) cracked the 5:03 mark at the ASD Invitational. With some of the top PA girls running the 3000 at the Penn Relays, the 3200 was light, but it did feature freshman Regan Rome of Dallas running a PA#5 time of 11:08.91 to win the Wyalusing Invitational.
 

In the hurdles, 2010 100 hurdles finalist Eliana Yankelev of Lower Merion ran a PA#5 time of 15.09 to win the Springfield Invitational. Morgan Long of Chichester was not far behind in 2nd with a PA#7 time of 15.25. In the 300 hurdles, Brodie Ercole of Lewisburg ran 46.08 to earn PA#8 honors and earn the top time in AA.
 

Two of the most consistent long jumpers for most of the winter found their stride at the Penn Relays in the long jump. Despite two rain delays, Jordan Matthews of Abington (18-7 PA#1) and Madeline Eustache of Upper Darby (18-3) got back over the 18 foot mark. Lauren Ball of Bloomsburg completed the reshaping of the top three with her PA#3 mark of 18-2.50. In the triple jump, Gabby Becattini of Methacton set a new personal best at the Penn Relays with a state leading mark of 38-3.25. Ahmenah Richardson of Milton Hershey became PA#2 with a mark of 37-9.75. Those two are the the only triple jumpers over 37. The rest of the list is clumped with 16 36 foot jumpers. Richardson also cracked the top three in the high jump with her PA#3 winning mark of 5-5. Annie Holland of Pennridge got a little closer to her indoor best with her Penn Relays PA#2 performance of 5-6.50. Places 4-11 are all at 5-4. Kasey Kemp of Norwin became the 3rd 12 foot pole vaulter in the state this season with a win at the Westmoreland County Championships. With two more 11-6 performances, the number of 11-6 vaulters is now up to 5.

Javelin was the hot throw of the week as Lauren Kenney of State College became the Penn Relays champion, the new state leader, and US#2 with her winning throw of 156-2. Christine Streisel of Tamaqua finished 2nd to complete the PA sweep with a US#4 mark of 153-10. PA has the nation's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best javelin throwers. In the discus, Aubree Ray of Middletown Area became PA#2 with a mark of 136 feet even, one of five throwers over 130 feet this season. In the shot put, two more 40 foot throwers were added this week, as PA#2 Megan Dornish of Elk County Catholic threw 44-5.50 to come within four inches of the state lead. Kayla Owens of West Chester Rustin moved up to PA#5 with a mark of 40-11. Seven throwers are now over the 40 foot mark this season.
