Ridgway Invitational
Ridgway
Photos and Meet Summary by Phil Grove
Elk County Catholic's Kennedy Weisner and Oswayo Valley's Barrett Kemp led by example at the Ridgway Invitational.
Their teammates followed close behind, locking up team titles for the two schools in a dress rehearsal for the District 9 championships later this month.
Weisner, who finished second to Homer Center's Angel Piccirillo in last year's Class AA race in Hershey, pulled away from the field early and cruised to victory in 19:14.34. The winning time was just 11 seconds off the meet record and nearly a full minute ahead of the field.
"It was really nice weather and the course was pretty dry," the soft-spoken sophomore said. "The conditions were way better than they have been in the past."
DuBois Area's Catherine Sheffo - a state qualifier in AAA last year - was the runner-up in 20:11.77, while Bailey Kemp of Oswayo Valley was third in 20:59.53. ECC's Maggie Sorg (21:04.54) and Jill Wallace of North Clarion (21:06.12) rounded out a top five dominated by AA runners.
Elk County Catholic claimed the girls title with 81 points, with DuBois Area second at 91.
In the boys race, Barrett Kemp duplicated Weisner's strategy by running away from the pack early, posting the win in 16:22.04. His effort was less than 10 seconds off the meet record set in 2008 by Dubois Area's Bud Plaszenski.
"I felt pretty good," the junior said. "I went out a little too fast, and I had a cramp set in about halfway. I wanted to have a solid lead and then see where it went from there."
Oswayo Valley placed three in the top 10 en route to 61 points and the team victory. Elk County Catholic had two in the top five and was second with 80.
Bradford Area's Aziz Yousif (17:14.11) was second, followed by Elk County Catholic's Caleb Lecker (17:26.37), North Clarion's Nick Schmader (17:33.60) and ECC's Ryan Detsch (17:48.19).
