A big Friday night for TSTCA #3 @ Slippery Rock for the boys 3000 and the girls Shot Put... Ellwood City's Jake Walker goes 8:42.9, which is US#1 in the 3000, while Center's Allyn Laughlin takes over US#3 and PA#1 with a throw of 45-07. On 1/21 at Kent State OH, Bradford's Erin Hannon moved into a three-way tie for US#1 in the High Jump, clearing 5-08. She also went 8.73 for 55H, 17-08 LJ, and 37-05.50 TJ. Conestoga's Liz Costello, coming off a storybook XC season, continued the journey of a dream senior season with a 4:56.09 Mile win at the New Balance Games in New York at the Armory. She and Katie Doswell of Virginia separated at 800 meters, and with 200 to go, Costello broke open the race. Her final 800 split was 2:22 according to coach Ryan Comstock. The Simon Gratz boys improved their PA#1, US#3 4x400 to 3:21.19 winning the event. Penncrest sophomore Karen Shump traveled to the University of North Carolina, and came away with a 3rd place Shot Put of 43-01 at the Eastern Challenge. Also at Kutztown, E&S's Trevon Rainford and Cumberland Valley's Curtis Bixler both broke 8:58 in the 3000, with Rain ford takin g the final sprint.

1/19: Robert Morris Challenge @ Robert Morris University: In a small meet at Robert Morris, Canon MacMillan's Katelyn McElhaney won the 55 Hurdles in 9.12, while her teammate Melissa Alauzen went 17-00.75 to win the Long Jump. Bill Nguyen of Balwin took the boys' Long Jump with a leap of 21-06.50.

1/20: Colgate Women's Games HS wk#4 @ Pratt Institute, NY: In week #4, Acoya Goines of Engineering & Science stepped it up, finishing 3rd in the 400 in 59.5. Teammate Benita Taylor

1/20: DVGTCA Indoor Meet #7 @ Lehigh University: The 4x800's were hot in New York with the banked track... but the teams that stayed in PA and ran at Lehigh on Friday night showed that fast is fast. West Chester Henderson's Jackie Merrick, Amy Jordan, Carly Hamond and Megan Durkee posted a great time of 9:43.2. Radnor ran 9:50.4 with West Chester East at 9:54.2. Methacton's Ryann Krais took a 1st in the 200 in 25.5, and a 2nd at 1:00.7 in the 400, where Latavia Thomas, West Catholic, ran 57.3. Hallahan's Shanae Thomas went 18-00.50 to win the Long Jump.

1/20: TFCAGP D2 Indoor Meet #7 @ Kutztown University: Wissahickon posted the best Distance Medley Relay of the year with a 10:40.1, setting a meet record in the process.Chichester's Carrington Queen set a meet record with his 7.4 55 Hurdles.

1/20: TSTCA Indoor Meet #3 @ Slippery Rock University: Where to begin? Distance or throws? The US#1 or the US#3. OK... we'll start with the US#1 3000 put down by last year's indoor state champ and record holder, Jake Walker
of Ellwood City. An 8:42.8 is smokin', anytime of year, but especially in mid-January and especially at Slippery Rock. The US#3. Looks like defending indoor and outdoor Shot Put champ Karen Shump
of Penncrest has some great competition this year, again, from western PA. Center's Allyn Laughlin
took over the top spot in PA and US#3 with a throw of 45-07. Hempfield's Samantha Fetter
wasn't far behind, tossing 44-01 for PA#3, and her teammate, Kimberly Kanala
also was over 40 feet again with a throw of 40-00.75. Jess Zozos
, Shaler, went 10:33.5 for a fast 3000. Just behind at 10:47.9 was Penn Trafford's Diana Filtz
. Filtz
also won the Mile, going 5;23.2. North Allegheny's Sean Gilv cleared 15-0 in the Pole Vault for the 2nd time this season.

1/20-21: Yale Track Classic @ Yale University: Three PA teams made the trip to the other side of New York and came away with some great performances. Kutztown senior Calvin Laing took 2nd in the 55 Dash in 6.58. Teammate Pat Vymazal, a junior, ran 51.76 for 7th in the 499, while senior Josh Neyhart went 4:29.50 in the Mile. In the Large School relays, Downingtown West's girls were 2nd in the 4x200 in 1:49.85 and 3rd in the 4x400 in 4:05.84. Their 4x800 ran 10:27.41. The Great Valley boys took 4th in the Small Schools DMR in 11:03.26, and a pair of 2nd in two other relays, 3:33.74 in the 4x400 and 8:32.79 in the 4x800.

1/21: 11th New Balance Games @ New York Armory: PA teams were banking on fast times at the armory in New York, and that's exactly what they got, garnering seven new PA #1 marks. The top performance was the big Mile win by Conestoga's Liz Costello, whose 4:56.09 is the fastest in PA Indoor since St. Hubert's Amy Kelly ran 4:52.68 at the Armory in 2004. Costello was alone with Virginia star Katie Doswell after 800 meters, and with 200 to go, Costello broke open the race. Her final 800 split was 2:22. Conestoga's 4x800 posted the best PA time of the season, going 9:24.34 in the 4th place finish. Cardinal O'Hara was 5th with a 9:32.86. Girls High of Philadelphia ran 4:11.77 to take 3rd in the Sprint Medley Relay, 2nd in PA.

The Downingtown East girls now own the top 4x400 mark in PA with their 2nd place 4:00.48. The top mark in the Pole Vault now belongs to Whitehall's Brooke Borso, clearing 12-03. Liberty's Beki Finn became the 4th PA girls over 12-0. Coatesville's Kaleena Gray became the 5th PA girls over 40 feet with her throw of 40-07.75. In the 4x200, Coatesville improved their PA#2 time to 1:44.97 with a 5th place. Moving into PA#3 was Penn Hills with a 6th place 1:45.24. In the Boys' Invitational Mile, Springfield Montco's Matlack Gillin took over the top PA spot with a very fast 4:19.65, good for 6th place. Simon Gratz improved their PA#1, US#3 4x400 to 3:21.19 winning the event. With their 2nd place, Cardinal O'Hara now has the top spot in the 4x800 in PA at 8:03.54.

1/21: Franklin & Marshall HS Invitational #2 @ F&M College: McKaskey's Anthony Westbrook took over the top spot in the Triple Jump with a leap of 46-02. He was 2nd in the Long Jump by three inches to Harrisburg's Matt Davis who leapt 21-05.50. Milton Hershey dominated the girls' competition. Crystal Polite won the 55 Hurdles in 9.07; Abigail Johnson went 1:000.71 in the 400; Jackqulain Williams went 36-05.00 to win the Triple Jump; and their 4x400 ran 4:08.44 for the win.

1/21: Kent State HS Open #1 @ Kent State University: In preparation for her first multi-event competition coming this Friday, January 27 at Bucknell, Bradford's Erin Hannon took on three of the four events, and added another for good measure, wiinning two and taking two 3rds. Her best mark of the night was a 5-08 High Jump, with a good look at 5-10. The mark puts her in a three-way tie for US#1. She won the Triple Jump with a leap of 37-05.50, and PRed twice in both the Prelims and then the Finals of the 55 Hurdles, going 8.77 and 8.73, respectively. Her other 3rd place finish was with a 17-08 Long Jump. Teammate Sarah Lonzi took 2nd to Penn Hills' Kaitliin Grimm in the 3200 11:26.18 to 11:31.24. Lonzi was 3rd in the Mile, running 5:21.08. Jonathan Kowall of Ambridge captured the 55 Hurdles in 7.89.

1/21: Maroon and Gold Invitational @ Kutztown University: Engineering & Science's Trevon Rainford and Cumberland Valley's Curtis Bixler moved into PA #'s 4 and 5, respectively in the 3000 with their 8:57-points. Rainford pulled out the win on the home sprint in 8:57.20. Bible Baptist's Brandon Tress has been traveling all across the state to find challenges, and found one again, this time from Norristown's Peter Shelby. Tress went 7.82 to win the 55 Hurdles by .18 over Shelby. Exeter's Travis Savidge went 43-08.50 in the Triple Jump, a half inch better than Cedar Cliff's Andy Maxwell, and 2.25 inches better than WIlson's Jay Whalen. Pottsgrove;'s Megan Van Buskirk triple-jumped 36-05.25. Two vaulters were over at 11-0 in the Pole Vault, including Abbi Shaffer of Easton, and Jacque Meissner of Saucon Valley. Shaffer won on misses.

1/21: TFCAGP D1 Indoor Meet #7 @ Glen Mills School: In the Distance Medley Relay, West Chester Henderson posted a PA#2 mark of 10:42.3, with West Chester East taking 2nd in the race in 10:45.7, and LaSalle 3rd in 10:51.8. North Penn's Cody Edling ran a 2:00.00 800.

1/21: Eastern Challenge @ University of North Carolina: Penncrest sophomore Karen Shump traveled to the University of North Carolina, and came away with a 3rd place Shot Put of 43-01, one of her top four throws of the season.

1/22: USATF Mid-Atlantic Indoor Youth Meet #2 @ Lehigh University: Dobbins' Jasmine Russ ran a 7.0 in the prelims, but West Catholic's Simone Carter took the finals of the 55 with her 7.2. Carter also captured the 200, going 25.6, with Russ 2nd in 26.8. Four Vertical Assault vaulters cleared 10-06 in the Pole Vault, led by Jacqueline Meissner of Saucon Valley, and followed by Easton's Abbi Schaffer, Bethlehem Catholic's Kerry McDermot, and Liberty's Rebecca Frey. Sean Barlett won the boys' Pole Vault, clearing 13-04.


Weekend Preview:Conestoga's Liz Costello, Strath Haven's Lisa Vienneau, and Springfield-Montco's Matlack Gillin will toe the line in the elite miles at the 11th New Balance Invitational at the New York Armory. The races are the final automatic qualifiers for this year's Millrose Games High School miles. (Yes, we know Liz is not listed on the official entry list on Dyestat, but her acceptance into the race has been confirmed with meet director Lou Vazquez.) PennTrackXC.com will be on-site at the Maroon & Gold Invitational at Kutztown University.

Meghan Burns, Allentown Central Catholic, takes 4th in 5:27.10.


Kassandra Meholic, Cedar Cliff, is a wire-to-wire winner in the 3000 in 10:31.79.
