Weekend Highlights:On Monday 2/6, Upper Darby's Rob McNally posted a PA-leading 1:55.9 at the Armory in NY. On Wednesday, Penn Trafford's Diana Filtz runs a PA#3 10:20.9 3000. The top three Hempfield throwers had great nights. Despite the threat of snow on Saturday, nearly 80 schools of the registered 115 descended on Lehigh for the first of a series of what are annually PA's best indoor meets. Fans were not disappointed, as two throwers known as Laughlin and Shump, one from the west and one from the east, grabbed the 1st and 3rd spots on the national charts, while two others took over the #2 spots in their events. And there was more. Much more...like the meet record in the 60 Hurdles and LJ win in an action-packed 'gotta compete and leave' hour by Methacton's Ryann Krais... or the two come-from-behind relay wins by Easton's Chanelle Price (in PennTrackXC.com photo) to go with her US#2 in the 800... Photo by PennTrackXC.com from 2/4 Slippery Rock Meet Hempfield throwers swept the Shot Put as Weston Banks went 56'5 3/4" and Samantha Fetter threw a PR 44-02.50 to beat Center's Allyn Laughlin at 43-01.50. Breehana Jacobs of Laulel Highlands, ran 220y in a quick 25.3. At the MAPL Champs on 2/11 at Lawrenceville Prep NJ, Mercersburg's Whitney Matthew was a double champ, The Hill School's Anna Strand won the Long Jump, and her teammate Michael Font Jr won the 1600.

2/6: Ridgewood Varsity Classic @ NY Armory: Upper Darby's Rob McNally has obviously been waiting for the friendly banked confines of the Armory, and used the quality track to post a PA#1 1:55.9 800. Glen Mills' throwers went 2-3-5 in the Shot Put behind the 54-07 effort of Nathan Stewart.St. Basil's Kathleen Davis ran the best 3200 of the indoor season in PA with here 11:07.8.
2/8: TSTCA Indoor Meet #6 @ The University of Pittsburgh: Penn Trafford's Diana Filtz runs a PA#3 10:20.9 3000 on 2/8. The top three Hempfield throwers had great nights, as junior Weston Banks won the event with a throw of 56'5 3/4" and CJ Clegg took 3rd with a throw of 52'1" In the girls shot put, Samantha Fetter went head-to-head with Center's Allyn Laughlin, with Fetter winning event with a PR of 44-2.50. Laughlin threw 43-01.50 for second place. Hempfield's Kim Kanala took third with a throw of 36-03.50. Ellwood City's Jake Walker dipped under 4:20 for the mile with his 4:19.6. And Breehana Jacobs of Laurel Highlands, went 25.3 for 220y, which essentially is a 25.1 in meters.
2/10: TFCAGP Indoor Novice Meet @ Lehigh University:
2/11: Mid-Atlantic Prep League Championships @ Lawrenceville Prep, NJ: Mercersburg's Whitney Matthew was a double champ, taking the 200 in 26.17 and the 400 in 1:00.20. Teammate Josh Light took 2nd in the 55 Dash in 6.71 after leading all qualifiers with a 6.69 in the prelims. Anna Strand of the Hill School won the Long Jump with her leap of 16-03. PA athletes went 1-2 in the boys' 1600, as Hill's Michael Font Jr. won in 4:29.72, followed by Griffin Burns of Mercersburg.
Because of school restrictions imposed because of
the impending snowstorm, Ryann Krais only got
two attempts in the Long Jump, winning the event with
an 18-07.75, and setting a Meet Record of 8.67
in the trials of the 60 Hurdles.
She was co-Athlete of the Meet.
2/11: PTFCA Indoor Track Carnival @ Lehigh University:
Center's Allyn Laughlin travelled from western PA on her way to two college visits, and got into a battle supreme with defending state champ Karen Shump of Penncrest. The two bested each other through their final two throws, with Laughlin setting a PR, inside or out, with a final heave of 46-11.75, now the top throw in the nation. That came just after Shump had nailed an indoor PR of 46-05.25. Laughlin says she likes to chase and "to be the last one throwing" so she has an opportunity to finish the competition with her best throw. But she wasn't sure how it was going to work after the prelims began with top seed first, which meant she was throwing before Shump for the first three throws.

But it was back to the normal progression for the finals. Laughlin had a lead of over a foot, and threw last. The progression of throws in the finals was as good as it gets in a head-to-head of this level.
FINALS: SHUMP: 45'3 1/4" - LAUGHLIN: 45'1 1/4" - SHUMP: 45'2 3/4" - LAUGHLIN: 45'9" - SHUMP: 46' 5 1/4" - LAUGHLIN: 46'11 3/4".
The marks are US#1 and #3, respectively.
Both athletes credited the competition for their great performances. Shump had home-ring advantage. Laughlin had family on hand. Even with the lead going into the finals, Shump followed her style and long-time advice from siblings to mark her first throws and then go after it in the finals. Laughlin likes to get another one in for the finals, but said that when Shump passed her on the first throw, "the opportunity to get in a safety throw is out the door." Coming to her final chance to take the lead and the win, Shump said she "was just trying to focus on getting my right foot under me, keeping back, and hopefully hitting one." She hit one... and Laughlin said it made her nervous. "My PR (in or out) was 46-02 coming into the meet, and then she goes 46-05.25. I was like 'oh man, I don't know.' Even when I saw mine hit, I wasn't sure I made. It felt good. When I saw it hit the ground, I knew it was close."

in the Trials) and won the 200 in a PR of 22.83.

With the impending snow storm, Methacton School District announced on Friday that all activities needed to be completed by 12 pm Saturday. That announcement meant that members of both the Girls and Boys Indoor Track Teams could not compete in the PTFCA Track Carnival scheduled at Lehigh University, unless there was someway they could be home by 12 pm. The meet was scheduled to start at 10 am. Knowing that the opportunity to compete against some of the best competition from throughout the state does not come along everyday, sophomore Ryann Krais decided to make the 1 hr 15 minute journey to Lehigh, eventhough she knew she would only have about 45 minutes of competition before having to return home. She made the most of those 45 minutes.
Entering the Long Jump as the number one seed, Krais was looking to better her state leading jump of 18' 3.75". On her second attempt, she easily surpassed that goal setting a new school record and current PA #1 distance of 18' 7.75", winning the event by more than one foot. Krais then sprinted to the 60 Meter Hurdles, an event that she has remained undefeated in throughout the season. Although the finals would be contested well after she would leave, she still had an opportunity to leave a mark on the event. She finished the race leaving an all-time mark on the event by setting a new meet record, winning her heat in a time of 8.67 seconds, which had been Norristown's Courtney Clarke at 9.14 in 2002). That time not only is the current #1 time in PA, but is also tied for #6 in the nation. At 10:45 am, Krais was out the doors at Lehigh and returned home to meet her curfew.
As with the traditional Cinderella story, Ryann Krais knew she had to exit the meet and be home by 12 o'clock (I know, that was AM and this was PM, but you get my point). But she left before she found out that she had been awarded with another prestigous honor. The PTFCA and Nike had named her the co-Female Athlete of the Meet. Fitting end to a fairy tale day.

Winning the Krais-less finals was Reading's Jazmin Hunt, who's 8.99 is now the second sub-9 second mark in PA this season. Joining Krais as co-Athlete of the Meet was Easton star Chanelle Price. In a much-anticipated showdown with Chester's Shaniel Chambers and Conestoga's Liz Costello in the open 800, Price showed that this is her event until someone knocks her off. Costello led Price through a 29-second opening 200, and never backed off. Chambers ran the more strategic 800, and when Costello started coming back, took over and held on for 2nd. But at that point, Price was long gone, pushing to a 2:11.78 and US#2 time. Chambers went 2:14.82, with Costello coming in at 2:16.29 for 3rd. Price earned her co-Athlete of the Meet honor in large part to her next two performances, anchoring the 4x800 in 2:13.8 to a 9:40.42 win, and then anchoring the winning 4x400 relay with a 56.7 split to catch several teams, finishing in 4:04.57. The 800 was a Meet Record, bettering the 2:15.27 by Maria Medina, Phoenixville, 1998.
The boys' Athlete of the Meet was Chichester's Carrington Queen, who won two events, setting a meet record 7.98 (US#4) in the trials of the 60 Hurdles, coming back to win in 8:02, which also would have broken the previous record set by Central's Michael Wray at 8.03 in 2004. He also won the 200, going 22.83.
The boys' 3000 also produced a top national mark, as Unionville's Paul Springer ran a strategic race, pacing off of Hatboro-Horsham's Josh Hibbs and Cumberland Valley's Curtis Bixler for much of the race. His winning 8:43.96 is currently US#2 behind Elwood City's Jake Walker. Springer and Hibbs gapped Bixer in the final 800, and then took turns at the front until the final lap when Springer pulled away. Springer broke the Meet Record set in 2002 by East Pennboro's Ryan Blood at 8:48.28.
There were two other meet records in this deep meet. Chambersburg junior Sarah Morrison bettered the 2001 5:09.49 Mile by Wissahickon's Paige Miller, running to a 5:05.37. Strath Haven's Lisa Vienneau was a strong 2nd at 5:09.81. And Easton's Abbie Schaffer cleared 11-09 in the Pole Vault to eclipse the 2003 meet record set by both current teammate Lindsay Regan, and Liberty's Lauren Birkenhead at 11-06 in 2003.
North Penn's boys 4x800 tuned up for the MOC and States with an 8:11.61. Glen Mills' Robert Williams got back in the same zip-code as his current state-leading Shot Put, winnng with a throw of 55-03.75. Springfield-Delco's Andre Nelson took over the top spot in PA with a 6.98 60 meter dash. And for the girls, Tierra Flowers, Coatesville, went 7.73, improving on her PA-leading 7.78.
