Eighth Annual John Sharp Viking Invitational
Archbishop Wood
In the girls varsity race, it was quickly a four-person race from the mile on. By the approach to the two mile mark, it was clearly a battle between Pennridge sophomore Marissa Sheva and Methacton junior Kara Steinke. And it remained that way until the final straight. It appeared that Sheva had the race won, but Steinke put on a late surge pulling even with about 30 meters to go… before Sheva used her 2:14 speed to open a gap. Both were timed in 18:25, which is #4 all-time for the course. Caitlyn Sheva surged over the final half mile to take 3rd in 19:06. In the team race, Pre-Season PA#6 Central Bucks East showed why they are getting such early consideration in the PTXC poll. Let by senior Marisa Hawley; who stuck close to the leading two for two miles; the team tallied just 64 points to outdistance Central Bucks West by 44. Hawley was 4th in 19:11, with a impressive top five compression of just 1:13.
Pennsbury senior Connor Harriman - a medalist in 2011 in XC - put a stamp on the race after the 2nd mile, posting a strong 15:45 for the win. Along with sophomore teammate Sam Webb, who was 2nd in 15:54, the leading duo made a very strong statement to District 1 an beyond, scoring just 36 points on a spread of just 1:04.
The Pennsbury 3-4-5 of Liam O'Connell, Will Johnson and Tom Martin all finished within together. Alec Brand of Central Bucks East was the only other runner un 16 on the humid day, going 15:57 to capture third. Penncrest, behind the 4th place finish of Chris Zazanjian, was in the team competition with 76 points.
