As always, there have been a few surprises along the course in PA. Probably the biggest is the absense of West Allegheny's Lauren Shaffer, who faded over the final mile in District 7, and missed the cut-off. She had moved up to AAA this year after taking the AA State Championship in 1999, with the second fastest time of the day. More impressively, she was 14th at the Footlocker Northeast Regionals as a junior, just 22 seconds off a national's berth. Dan Mazzacco, Baldwin, and Shawn Cavanaugh continued their seesaw year, with the Mount Lebanon Jr. taking the WPIAL (D7) Championship. In the east, Karl Dusen won the District 1 title, and his team, with the help of a tiebreaker, beat Council Rock. But Coatesville was close until the final 800, when they lost valuable places, finishing third. In D11 and D3, freshman girls spoiled the plans of seniors by winning District titles. Junior Katie Ewart of Upper Dublin runs 18:09 to dominate D1 AAA, defeating Wissahickon's Paige Miller for the second time in two weeks. And Cedar Cliff served notice that it's how well you run at the end of the year that counts, by dominating their D3 AAA meet. Could it be the start of a dynasty in Wyomissing? Their AA girls team won States in 1999, and not only took the girls D3 title, they probably would have won the AAA one too. It's all here, plus more.
