The morning broke to a surprising chilly wind and ominous clouds, especially considering a forecast to fun a warmth. As it turned out, the day must have been designed to give the 4x800's and 3200's a little cover and comfort... and then to transform into a day of brilliant sunshine and mostly light winds to allow the brilliance of the the performances to be clearly seen.
AA Girls:
Milton Hershey, 72. Boiling Springs, 33.
There were four PIAA records broken by the AA Girls. Westmont-Hilltop's Karlee McQuillen upped her all-time state best in the Javelin (AA, AAA or any A) by throwing 162-04. The PIAA record of 154-05 had also been the state best until McQuillen threw 161-05 in early May. The record had been held by Angela Hoover of Bald Eagle Area. Allyn Laughlin, the Center throwing star, improved her PR and the PIAA record in the Shot Put to 50-10.75. The record was 47-03.50 by East Juniata's Heather Coyler, who still has the all-time state best of 50-11.

Quaker Valley ran a PIAA record 48.56, eclipsing the 48.70 that had been run by Milton Hershey in 1999. And Carver Engineering & Science went 3:53.34 to break the record they had set in 2005 of 3:53.43. In the team race, Milton Hershey has now won five of the past six years, and now has back-to-back team wins, easily outdistancing 2nd place Boiling Springs. Milton Hershey racked up 72 points with double repeat event titles by senior Abigail Johnson in the 200 (24.76) and 400 (56.35); a 2nd in the 4x400 (3:54.18); a 2nd in the 4x100 (49.01); a 2nd from Anna-Christine Scull in the 800 (2:16.87); a 2nd from Ruth Brown (45.11); who also had a 4th place 12.24 finish in the 100; plus 2nd and 7th place finishes by Ruth Brown in the 100 Hurdles (14.57) and 300 Hurdles. Boiling Springs won their first ever state runner-up trophy. Senior Mary Dell showed that her sophomore state title in the 200 was no one-time race, adding the 2006 title in the 100 (12.11) and taking the 2nd spot in a PR of 24.82 in the 200. She also anchored the 4x400 to a 4th place 3:59.41. Sophomore Kara Millhouse moved up a spot from her 2005 runner-up in the 3200, taking command of the race over the final 400 meters to win in 10:53.02. Gwynedd Mercy started as expected, with a comfortable repeat win in 4x800, going 9:14.40. Brianna Liebold added her 2nd title of the meet after taking Friday's long jump, triple-jumping 38-07.25. Center senior Lindsay Dolan repeated as 100 meter hurdles champion, running a 14.01. Tyrone's Emily Ingle finished her breakthrough senior campaign with a 4:57.43 1600 meter run title. Amanda Seigworth of Northwestern, repeated as the 300 meter hurdles champ in 44.22.
Benita Taylor anchored a record-setting 4x400
and won the open 800 for Engineering & Science
Benita Taylor of Engineering & Science, also added a 2nd state 800 meter run championship to her resume, going 2:14.68.

What a tie for two of the smaller AAA schools in Pennsylvania, Bradford and Strath Haven! This was a meet of firsts for Bradford. On Friday, Erin Hannon had won the first individual outdoor state championship in school history by taking the high jump in the morning, and adding 6th place points in the afternoon in the long jump.. On Saturday, she added a 2nd individual title by triple jumping 39-07.75. But the points that set up Bradford for their share of the team title came from sophomore Sarah Lonzi, who captured 5th place in the morning 3200 meter run in 10:59.01. Strath Haven relied on the guts and determination of senior Lisa Vienneau. To help the team, she asked to try the difficult 1600, 3200 double, and it paid off. She used a big PR of 10:36.41 to give her team 10 big points Saturday morning on the way to their 31 point tie with Bradford. Vienneau also finished 4th in the 1600, going 5:01.43. Strath Haven also got top points by winning the 4x400 in 3:51.16; 4th place points from Kerry Kelly with her 45.65 in the 300 hurdles; and 7th place points from sophomore Alix Williams in the 100 hurdles. One of the greatest sprint doubles in state history was performed by Laurel Highlands junior Breehana Jacobs. Her two runs of 11.47 and 23.85 are fast, despite both being wind-aided; 2.3 for the 100 and 2.8 for the 200. She was clearly superior to the field in every prelim, semi and final. Let's hope that in 2007, the winds die down, at least for her two finals. Central Bucks West ran the best 4x800 of the meet, going 9:04.05 by taking control from the gun.
Ryann Krais set a PIAA record in the 300 Hurdles to go with her Long Jump title
Brianna Broyles of William Allen won the 100 meter hurdles in 14.26. In the 300 meter hurdles, she ran into new PIAA record holder Ryann Krais, the Methacton sophomore, who is half-way through rewriting a few pages in PA track history. Krais takes over the all-time best in the PA history in the 300 Hurdles with a 41.46, bettering the 1996 mark of 41.88 set by Joyce Bates of Simon Gratz. Broyles was actually leading Krais over hurdle #6, before Krais' speed between the hurdles helped her put away Tiffany Abney's 2002 PIAA record of 42.11 with that 41.46. Broyles ran 43.73 after running a 43.32 in Friday's prelims. The Simon Gratz girls of won the 4x100 in 47.99, the same time awarded to Penn Hills. Easton sensation Chanelle Price caught Chester's Shaniel Chambers just before the line to run a 2:09.58 800. Lindsay Regan closed out her incredible state Pole Vault career with a win, clearing 12-06. And Hempfield's Samantha Fetter got her state championship, throwing 129-08 to win the Discus.

AA Boys:
Boys AA Danville Area, 38. Westmont Hilltop, 29.
Danville turned three wins and a runner-up into a state title. After Travis Miller had gotten the team 10 points on Friday with his win in the Javelin, it was Saturday afternoon that gave them the boost to victory. Josh Perruquet, a senior, cleared 6-08 to win the High Jump. In the 100 finals, junior Andrew Cope got 2nd place points, going 10.65 to lose by just .01 to Holy Name's Christopher Muvdi. And then the 4x100 relay blew the doors off with a 42.30. Valley junior Toney Clemons won two events, the 110 Hurdles in 14.36 and the Long Jump with a leap of 23-02.25. Jake Walker gave the AA record of Chris Dugan (Southmoreland) his best shot, diving at the line in an attempt to get the mark. He missed by just .22, running 9:04.31. Walker ran all of the race in the lead, with a nasty headwind on the backstretch. Engineering & Science went 7:54.07 to take the 4x800, with Jamar Jones coming back in the afternoon to win the 800 in 1:52.33, and Camp Hill's Adam Smith 2nd in 1:52.36. Sophomore Cliff Toledo ran 21.77 for the 200. It was under the PIAA record, but with a 4.9 wind.

Khaliff Featherstone catches Cody Edling in the morning's 4x800,
the first of three relays wins to go with the Simon Gratz team title.
AAA Boys:
Boys AAA Gratz, 44. JP McCaskey, 31.
On the way to the first state track & field champ- ionship by a District 12 team, Simon Gratz used the first relay to demon- strate two things. First, that they can run every event from the 100 to 800 with except- ional results. And secondly, that sophomore Khaliff Featherstone is the most versatile and talented athlete in the running events. Featherstone contributed to come-from-behind wins in the 4x800 (7:43.43, North Penn, 7:43.90), the 4x100 (42.02, Germantown, 42.18), and the 4x400 (3:14.99. Cumberland Valley, 3:15.05). It's believed to be the first time ever that a team has swept all three relays at the state meet. Those 30 points alone were nearly enough to win the meet. Add the 3rd place points in the 100 (10.70w) from Kenneth Talley, plus his 2nd place 21.65 in the 200, and you have Bulldog power and 44 points.
And later that same day, Featherstone catches David Stonfer in the 4x400,
the first of three relays wins to go with the Simon Gratz team title.
JP McCaskey was a strong 2nd on the basis of two individual wins, including one by Leander Toney, 6-10 (on misses) in the High Jump, and Caesar Westbrook, who won the triple jump on Friday with a leap of 48-09.75. Westbrook came back to take 2nd in the long jump at 24-00. McCaskey's 6th in the 4x100 in 42.74 sealed the deal by three over North Penn and New Castle. One match-up that was missed by fans was the Featherstone-Reggie Carter dual in the 400. Carter defended his one lap title in 47.35, within .07 of the PIAA record run by Steel Valley's Clinton Davis in 1983. Carter came back to beat a strong field in the 200, going 21.32w. He had run a wind-aided 21.30 in the semis. Unionville junior Paul Springer had the same problem as Walker. How to pace yourself to a sub-9:00 3200. He used a 63.1 closing lap to come close in 9:01.72. Manheim Township senior Brad Miller finally got a state title to call his own, after being in the shadow of his twin Craig, for nearly four years. His 4:10.43 was within a second of Craig's PIAA record, and simply makes him the fastest in PA this year by a lot. Conestoga Valley sophomore Vince McNally showed that his XC season was the real deal, closing strong to take 2nd in 4:15.49. The 800 was a great battle for 799 meters, with West Chester East's Andrew Lobb the leading leaner in a quick 1:51.99, as Jared Weaver, Conestoga Valley ran 1:52.26, Andrew Rotz, Central Dauphin 1:52.35 and Aaron Kauffman, 1:52.77. That's a lot of people across the line in less than a second. The 100 meter dash this year went to William Allen's Rushane Scott in 10.60w. Chichester senior Carrington Queen didn't defend his 300 hurdles title, but he did take the 110 hurdles in a wind-aided 13.98 to beat the defending state champ Delon Isom of Harrisburg, who ran 14.10. The lone AAA Boys PIAA record was set by pole vaulter Jared Jodon of Laurel Highlands, who cleared 16-02 to eclipse the 1997 mark of Laban Marsh by an inch. North Penn's Chris Dollinger got off the biggest long jump of the day, going 24-03.50, a PA#1. Kiski's Josh Vick threw a huge 208-09 to win the Javelin.
Brad Miller claimed his own state title,
