Sophomore middle distance runner Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) won an individual BIG EAST title in the 1000 meters and also anchored the conference champion 4x800 meter relay at the New York Armory on Sunday afternoon, where Villanova finished third in the team standings after a terrific day of competition to wrap up the meet.

For years, Emily Lipari toiled through workouts alone, or sometimes with her older brother, Tom, or some members of the boys team at Roslyn. She couldn’t wait for a training partner that could push her finally. The Villanova freshman surely got one.

Garden City’s Emily Menges, a Georgetown-bound senior, dragged her standout middle-school teammates through 800 meters on the first day of the Section 8 state qualifier. While Menges powered through her best race of the season, seventh-grader Emma Gallagher and eighth-grader Katie O’Neill scurried to keep up like kids following their mom at the mall.

WHITE PLAINS – North Babylon’s Vanessa Stewart collapsed on the infield while she waited for her award. She laid flat on her back and stretched like she would sleep right there on the artificial turf at White Plains -- a well-deserved rest after she rewritten the record books at the Loucks Games.

WHITE PLAINS – Over the course of two years and many head-to-head races, Roslyn’s Emily Lipari and Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall have become good friends, although it’s been a one-sided friendship. At least on the track.

RANDALLS ISLAND -- She finished her race, jogged over to her mom and her Roslyn coach Vera Trenchfield, red-faced by the cold and barely out of breath. She clapped her hands together and spoke easily.

The crowd keep buzzing afterward, the way an audience sounds when they are still trying to accept the moment into reality. That’s how it sounded after the boys 4x200 at the New Balance Games – a buzzing that signified both awe and admiration.
