Lauren Bricker (Hempfield Area) and Shawn Cavanaugh (Mt. Lebanon) overcame unusually warm conditions (sunny in high seventies) to defend their WPIAL titles.

Bricker scored an easy victory by posting a time of 19:08. Her closest competitor was Jessica Perry (Peters) who was 22 seconds behind. The big story of the race was Lauren Shaffer(last years AA winner). After running neck and neck with Bricker for over two miles, she faded and failed to qualify for the PIAA Championship.

Cavanaugh, who missed several races in mid season, looked like his old self while posting a decisive triumph over Baldwin's Dan Mazzacco. Cavanaugh's winning time was 16:10.

New champions were crowned in the girls' and boys' AA competition. Quaker Valley's Maxine Marfield, who finished third in 1999, overcame the heat and hilly terrain to post an easy 32 second win in 20:38.

Jeremy Snodgrass, of Greensburg Central Catholic, cruised to a win in 17:19. It was 16 seconds better than runner-up Jon Gratton of Quaker Valley.

Four teams and 20 individuals advance to PIAA Championships in AAA, while three teams and 15 individuals go to states in AA. Remember displacement takes place in individual advancement.
